After the presentation of the study of Professor Ángel Faz, on the decontamination of Hondón land, from Podemos they have verified the emergency situation that means maintaining a lot of land highly polluted by heavy metals and radioactive material, due to its high risk on the health of the population of Cartagena, mainly in the neighbors of the neighborhoods closest to the plot of El Hondón2E
The study of the research team of the UPCT, led by Professor Ángel Faz, has once again confirmed that the Hondón land contains heavy and radioactive metals, specifically 5842E777 m³ of phosphogypses, and 88,650 m³ of pyrite material.
But also, from the purple formation, they emphasize that they are also more than 27,000 m³ of concrete, and 100,000 m³ of construction and demolition waste.
For Podemos Cartagena it is urgent to undertake emergency measures that are necessary to protect the population from the risk of suffering from diseases such as cancer, due to the presence of these heavy metals in the very center of the city, and together with many neighborhoods in Cartagena, such as Mateos, La Estación, Torreciega, or San Ginés.
That is why they have transferred the mayor, that in the shortest time possible, the three "Emergency Temporary Actions", which Professor Ángel Faz has pointed out, are being implemented:
1-First the perimeter fence of the area.
2-Subsequently cover in its entirety the whole plot with a large park;
and not allow the extraction of groundwater, as these are also contaminated mainly by large amounts of ammonium.
3-After executing these actions, initiatives that result from consensus among neighbors, political groups, and municipal technicians should be set in motion, where the general interest is sought at all times, and above all that citizens do not charge the costs of decontamination, in addition to being protected at all times from continuing to suffer a serious risk to your health.
"17 years have been waiting for neighbors to decontaminate land that the polluting company abandoned without anyone demanding its restoration.
The time has come for the City Council to take action on the matter, and to begin with protect the citizens by covering and fencing the area, and then to demand the true culprits of this situation to comply with the principle that "the polluter pays" , said Pilar Marcos, Secretary General of Podemos Cartagena.
