Cartagena received this Wednesday, November 21, the Accessible Tourism Destination 2018 award given by the Thyssenkrupp Home Solutions group.
The municipality was chosen in a first phase as representative of the Region of Murcia;
and won the first prize, shared with Benidorm, after a period of voting that took place between October 8 and 21.
The collecting of the prize has run in charge of the councilman of Tourism, David Martínez Noguera;
by the head of Marketing and Communication of Thyssenkrupp Home Solutions, Belén Galán;
the territorial responsibility, Javier Llobell;
and the delegate in the Murcia Region of Thyssenkrupp Elevadores, José Antonio Sánchez.
The councilor thanked those who voted for the municipality as Accessible Tourism Destination 2018, and pointed out that enhancing tourism is one of the main objectives of the City Council, which "works tirelessly for full inclusion," he added.
David Martinez explained that the architectural barriers of the interpretation centers and the deposits of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas have been eliminated from the consistory, through the installation of ramps, elevators, stair lift platforms, adapted toilets, free loan of wheelchairs , museographic resources for people with hearing or visual disabilities, and reduced rates.
He also explained that from the City of Cartagena has launched an initiative with the SOI Foundation, a non-profit inclusive leisure that facilitates the participation of people with intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy of Cartagena and Shire in activities of leisure.
Martinez has warned that much remains to be done, but that this recognition encourages further work to achieve a more inclusive municipality, "not only for those who visit us, but also for the people who live here."
On the other hand, Belén Galán explained that this initiative emerged five years ago with the aim of establishing a meeting point that would put in value all the work and effort that municipalities do in the field of tourism and inclusion.
Galán stressed the importance of joint work between private companies, institutions, associations and civil society to improve accessibility in a country where tourism has great potential.
Belén Galán recalled that one hour after the end of the voting, the website was dropped due to the large participation of voters in Cartagena and Benidorm, so it was decided to recognize the two municipalities, which each obtained around 45,000 votes.
After the awards ceremony has been carried out a visit to one of the accessible tourist itineraries of the city, where the representatives of the Thyssenkrupp group have known the progress of the municipality of Cartagena in tourism and inclusion.
