The recovery of hospitalized children through physical, social, emotional and cognitive improvement is the goal of the 'Doctor Guau' project, which is launched at the Santa Lucia hospital in Cartagena through a collaboration agreement between the Murciano Service of Health and Mr. Dogs, Association of Dogs of Therapy and Assistance of Murcia.
"This is a project that aims to humanize the hospitalization process for the youngest, in order to improve their recovery and contribute to overcoming hospital trauma," said the Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, during the presentation of this initiative .
Specifically, through 'Doctor Guau' is carried out assisted therapy with dogs to hospitalized children with a double line of action, educational, focused on learning challenges and emotional needs, and socio-health, which is concerned with enhancing humanization and sanitary processes in hospitals.
The Santa Lucia hospital, which develops this project through the Hospital and Domiciliary Educational Care Team, will have five specially trained dogs to follow the orders of the medical team and the educators.
It is a collaborative work between teachers, health professionals and the child's own family and personal environment.
And it has a planned program that marks objectives and personalized processes for each educational-health intervention, although it also establishes that they can be developed in a group.
Thus, the visit to each patient is done individually, since each child or adolescent is evaluated in relation to their difficulties, which are analyzed and prioritized in order to determine the achievements and changes that are expected to be achieved.
All interprofessional sessions are programmed, developed and evaluated by the coordination team.
Benefits
Through the actions that are carried out, the overcoming of the hospital trauma as well as the emotional and physical conflicts is pursued.
It is about creating a symbolic territory through the relationship with dogs, where forces are generated with which children are able to face their reality.
Thanks to the development of reading comprehension and reading habits, together with the development of linguistic and logical mathematical skills, the aim is to improve the spoken language of children, since dogs do not carry out the order until the diction is correct.
The arithmetic and geometric capacity of the patients will be improved, since the dogs are trained to indicate the result of simple operations through barking or touching with the nose or paw a certain object, and the care of the environment is fostered, recycling objects for making toys for animals.
Motor development is also stimulated, since motor rehabilitation is achieved through games with dogs, which replace exercises performed with devices, and the promotion of health habits and their importance through hygiene activities with animals. .
From the health point of view, it helps to reduce the child's anxiety and stress;
to know in a playful way the protocol of the sanitary interventions, since the children simulate curing the dogs;
the cases of depression are improved, blood pressure is reduced, and also the self-esteem is increased and the state of mind is elevated.
