Cs warns the City Council that the call for the European subsidy to install free Wi-Fi ends today (09/11/2018)

- Orange spokesman Manuel Padín, explained that "the European Union has enabled 120 million euros until 2020 to address the financing of equipment for free public Wi-Fi services in up to 8000 municipalities in all Member States. In that list of eligible municipalities in Spain, is Cartagena "

- Cs yesterday sent this warning to the Government and hopes that it has fulfilled its obligation to access the aid

Citizens have repeatedly asked the City of Cartagena to establish Internet access points "free" through the Wi-Fi service in the municipal buildings, including the Palacio Consistorial, and in strategic public spaces.

The spokesman for the orange training, Manuel Padín, recalled that it was "nothing more and nothing less than more than three years ago, in June 2015, when a plenary agreement went ahead to carry out" a complete study of technical feasibility and financial costs for the implementation of a municipal Wi-Fi network, covering different points and zones of the city in different phases, with the aim of offering, in the last instance, a universal and free access to all citizens of the municipality of Cartagena ".

"More than three years after the approval of this agreement, the study and execution of this initiative still do not see the light", lamented Manuel Padín who believes that "this is probably the most pathetic example of how political chaos can harm the interests of citizens. "

For the spokesperson of Cs it is incomprehensible that "it has not been implemented in an eminently tourist city like ours, the installation of areas with Wi-Fi coverage in public spaces of interest and city squares, it does not even exist in the City of Cartagena, nor in the Consistorial Palace or in the Administrative Building of San Miguel, we want to be an intelligent city, a smart city, and this government team, together with the previous one that also has its share of blame, is still installed in the 20th century ".

For all the above, and pending the implementation of the 2015 agreement, Citizens asked in April that at least the Government request a European subsidy for the installation of Wi-Fi hotspots in the public spaces of Cartagena.

The call will close this afternoon at five.

On March 20, the European Commission launched the web portal of the initiative 'WiFi4EU'.

Citizens has reported that this initiative aims to offer municipalities in the European Union the possibility of registering in a call to be held in mid-May of this year to qualify for 15,000 euro bonds for the creation of free wireless Internet access points in public spaces, such as squares, museums, libraries, among others.

Orange spokesman explained that "the European Union has enabled 120 million euros until 2020 to address the financing of equipment for free public Wi-Fi services in up to 8,000 municipalities in all the Member States. In that list of eligible municipalities in Spain , is Cartagena. "

"From Ciudadanos we consider it a very good initiative, and we have to take advantage of it, we sent a letter yesterday to the City Council remembering that the call is closed this afternoon, I hope you have fulfilled this unique opportunity for our municipality and its citizens to have the possibility of use Wi-Fi in the busiest public areas and that is an added value for tourists visiting Cartagena, "said Padin.
