Within the framework of the Space Debate "Alfonso Lorente", the problem of the presence of asbestos on the roofs of the schools and institutes of the municipality, many of these with more than 30 years old, has been discussed.
In October 2015 and at the beginning of 2016, Podemos presented a motion at the City Council of Cartagena and the Regional Assembly where "it would proceed as soon as possible, and after the technical reports and preparation of the appropriate censuses, to the desamiantado of all the schools of the municipality of Cartagena, and of the Region of Murcia ".
These motions were approved unanimously by the political groups of both the Municipal Plenary of the City of Cartagena, and those that make up the Regional Assembly.
Since the approval of these motions, the regional government has been delaying the demands of both the AMPAS of schools and institutes, as well as the municipal government itself, when they were required both the censuses of the schools affected by asbestos covers and the reports technicians to assess the situation of each of these covers.
It was at the end of 2017 when the Ministry of Education provided a first list of the schools affected by asbestos at the regional level, and announced which were to start the de-blessing work.
The list included 26 schools in the municipality of Cartagena affected by fiber cement roofs, however for the years 2018 and 2019, the Ministry of Education did not contemplate the demotion of any of the schools in Cartagena.
The European Union marked as the deadline for the elimination of fiber cement from schools, the year 2028, and in Cartagena still has not produced the withdrawal of any of the 26 schools, and 8 affected Institutes, so since Cartagena can demand to the Ministry of Education that implements a plan for demotion of the affected centers, which reflects the dates of withdrawal of each of the centers, and that also come accompanied by the budget items necessary to carry out the works of desamiantado.
Before the announcement of the Ministry of Education, to the Platform against Asbestos in the Colleges and Institutes of Cartagena, which also belongs to Cartagena, on the removal of fibrocement roofs schools San Cristobal, San Felix, Antonio Ulloa , Santa Lucía and the Juan Sebastián Elcano Institute, Podemos is going to demand that it be reflected in the corresponding items of the 2019 budget, as well as the possibility of approving multi-year budgets that reflect the budgets committed to execute the de-blessing works in all of the schools of the municipality of Cartagena and the Region of Murcia.
"For the governments the first thing would have to be to protect the health of the children, and of the whole school community, that is why from Podemos we will continue pressing to achieve a regional plan for the removal of asbestos from schools, budgeted, scheduled and feasible, and we are going to present amendments to the regional budgets where the sufficient budget allocation is consigned so that in 2019 the desamiantado of all the schools and institutes that are more affected by the fiber cement in the municipality of Cartagena and in the Region, "said Pilar Marcos, General Secretary of Podemos Cartagena.
From CTSSP report that asbestos is also present in several municipal buildings, highlighting some of special sensitivity such as the houses of the janitors that are within the precincts of some schools in Cartagena, but also in many ramblas, roads and mountains of our municipality , and even in many illegal plots and landfills, where nobody undertakes cleaning, causing a risk to the health of all citizens.
That is why the training purple, will present a motion for the next plenary session in November, where they will ask the Municipal Government, the hiring of a company specializing in removing fiber cement material, in addition to the implementation of a "Municipal Plan for De-embedded of municipal buildings ".
