The Popular University held on Thursday, October 25, the opening of the 2018/2019 Course at the Ramón Luzzy Cultural Center, an event that was attended by the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, and the director of the Popular University, José Macián.
The inauguration included the performance of soprano Amber Kay and pianist Javier Alcaraz, as well as the opening speech given by Luis Miguel Pérez Adán, chronicler of Cartagena, on "Images of the Cartagena of 1931, year in which that the Popular University was founded "being this one of the first popular universities that were created in Spain, following the French model.
The mayor also dedicated some words of appreciation to the work of the UP, recalling that "the Popular University was the dream of a couple of writers, Carmen Conde and Antonio Oliver, who, driven by their vocation for teaching and eager to instill such values important as equality, managed to turn into reality. "
In this sense, Ana Belén Castejón announced that "this year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the death of Antonio Oliver, who died on July 28, 1968, the Popular University has organized several events with which to pay tribute to his memory and to the precious legacy that, together with Carmen Conde, left us all Cartagena ".
Among these activities highlights the exhibition 'Essential 50 years later', which will open at the Cultural Center on November 8, at 7:00 pm, and in which prominent artists will show their views on the work of Antonio Oliver 'Poesía Essential'.
MORE PRESENCE IN THE DISTRICTS
In recent years the number of free courses offered in the program 'The Popular University in your neighborhood' has increased, going from 88 in 2017 to 115 in 2018, and following the progression, with the new offer, this course will increase the previous figure.
The same goes for 'A Summer of Cinema', which has taken the cinema to neighborhoods and to the County Councils, increasing from 18 to 24 screenings over the past summer.
