On Thursday, October 24, the City of Cartagena, will offer a new tribute to the scientist and explorer from Cartagena, Marcos Jiménez de la Espada.
This recognition would consist in the placement of a plaque in San Antonio el Pobre, the native street of the naturalist.
The initiative of this new tribute started with the professors of the Department of History of the Jiménez de la Espada Institute, after the recovery of the bust located on the Paseo de Alfonso XIII.
The act will be attended by the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, along with other members of the Municipal Corporation, official reporters of the city and students of the educational center.
It will take place at San Antonio el Pobre street, corner with Calle Caballero, at 12:00 hours.
Zoologist, explorer and writer, Marcos Jiménez de la Espada was born in Cartagena in 1831 and is known for participating in the so-called Scientific Commission of the Pacific, the largest carried out by Spain in America after losing most of its overseas territories in this continent, which Jiménez de la Espada and his companions traveled between 1862 and 1865. He also published works on Geography and History of the American continent.
This October is the 120th anniversary of his death in Madrid, in 1898.
