The company Thyssen Krupp awards the prize to Cartagena and Benidorm as the most accessible tourist destinations 2018. In its fifth edition, the port city shares the prize with Benidorm, obtaining more than 45,000 votes each.
Social networks have been the place where this campaign has been carried out.
From October 8 to 21 the vote was open, and from the beginning Cartagena was among the first positions.
In total, more than 130 locations were candidates for this award, and had to meet certain requirements to be: Having a comprehensive accessibility plan and at least one accessible tourist route that would allow knowing the most important corners of the city.
It also had to have a gastronomic and hotel offer adapted for people with reduced mobility or with some cognitive disability.
"A very important prize for Cartagena, even if it is shared.
To be chosen as an accessible tourist destination not only means that we are on the right track but it is a promotion of relevance at a national level, since there are many people who have voted, even from other parts of Spain ", explained the councilor for Tourism , David Martínez
In addition, the mayor said that "Cartagena deserves this award for the initiatives being carried out to achieve greater accessibility, although there is much to do and this government team will continue to work to make our city more and more accessible" .
Among the actions that are being carried out, it is important to highlight those accessibility projects that are being developed in places of tourist affluence such as hotels, museums or beaches so that those with physical or cognitive disabilities can enjoy Cartagena.
The councilman of Tourism wanted to convey his gratitude "to all those people who voted for us, not only from Cartagena, but from other parts of the country."
