Agri-food cooperatives and researchers of the Chair of Sustainable Agriculture of the UPCT have requested today, before the Rector, the Government Delegate, the mayor of Cartagena and the presidents of the Hydrographic Confederation and the Commonwealth of Canals of the Taibilla the reopening of the less two wells in the Campo de Cartagena to expand denitrification tests to real farming plots.
"With our system of bioreactors with lemon wood chips we have managed to reduce nitrates by 97%, so that the waste is not harmful to health or the environment," explains the director of the Chair and researcher of the School of Agronomists of the UPCT, Juan José Martínez.
The Chair has studied this new denitrification technology in the last year with an exceptional authorization from the Confederation for the UPCT to reopen its well water desalination plant at the Tomás Ferro Agroalimentary Experimental Station, whose waste is being deposited in a waterproofed pond without risk. for the aquifers that drain into the Mar Menor.
The next step is "to test the technology at farm scale, reopening two or three wells with water characteristics different from ours," adds Martinez.
The Chair will monitor the system to verify the results and guarantee the ecological security of the process.
Once the brine has lost 97% of its nitrates, from levels of 200 milligrams to only 7 milligrams per liter, the waste would be "apt to be dumped into the Mediterranean through the marine desalination stations," says the researcher of the Polytechnic
The government delegate, Diego Conesa, and the president of the Confederation, Mario Urrea, announced during the visit their intention to "directly involve" the CHS in the Chair of Sustainable Agriculture to "find scientific solutions that make compatible" the economic interests of the agrarian and tourist sectors in the Campo de Cartagena.
The rector of the Polytechnic, Alejandro Diaz, recalled that the UPCT is also conducting tests for the reuse of brine as raw material for the manufacture of industrial bleach.
