Before the special notice issued by the State Meteorological Agency in which reports on the episodes of cold drop, with heavy, persistent rainfall and storms and accumulations, which are scheduled for this weekend in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, the Service Firefighters of Fire Extinguishing and Salvage (SEIS) of the City of Cartagena offer a series of self-protection tips.
Thus, firefighters remember that to prevent any incident, if you are at home at the time when there are heavy rains or unstable meteorological phenomena, toxic products should be placed out of reach of water.
Similarly, you must previously store water and products that do not require refrigeration or cooking, at least for three days.
In the previous days, you must clean the roof, downspouts, drains, as well as any accumulation of leaves or soil that may hinder the passage of water to the sewer to prevent flooding.
Finally, it is recommended to place goods and documentation in the highest area of the house and have ready flashlight, radio and batteries.
On the other hand, if you know of an emergency you should tune the local station, leave the phone free, remove everything outside the house that could be dragged, disconnect any electrical device and if your home is in danger all has been to be prepared to leave it if the authorities order it, and go to a safe place.
Do not park in dry riverbeds, or on the banks of rivers, or avoid driving on roads near ravines or crossing bridges through which the water flows, before a possible flood.
Once the emergency has already passed, you should check the house in case there is danger of collapse, refrain from drinking water, due to the possibility that it is contaminated, start cleaning the higher areas and deposit on sidewalks and road the equipment that is unused.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AUTOMOBILEISTS IN THE EVENT OF FLOODING
In the event that you do not receive outside help in the first moments of facing this emergency, keep the following in mind:
Inquire through the Meteorological Institute or Civil Protection of the risks of torrential rains in the areas to which you are going to travel.
You can get instructions about possible avenues through local radio stations.
Keep in touch with them.
Know where the high places are and how to get there quickly.
Prepare to leave the car and go to higher areas:
If the water starts to level up on the road.
If your vehicle gets stuck.
If crossing a stream, the water is above the axis or reaches above the knee.
If the vehicle is submerging in the water and finds it difficult to open the door, exit through the windows without loss of time.
Never cross places flooded by car.
Remember that a small depression at the level of the road on a hill can have a considerable depth of water.
If you can still cross it, remember to do it with a low speed and moving very slowly so that the water does not splash the engine and you can stop it.
The brakes do not work well if they are wet, therefore, check them several times after crossing.
It is not advisable, even if you know your route perfectly, move with your vehicle along a flooded road or cross a bridge hidden by the waters.
The force of the water could drag the vehicle and even the road may be out of service.
Pay attention to landslides, sinkholes, drains, loose or downed power lines, and in general, to all fallen objects.
Avoid traveling at night, the dangers are more difficult to detect.
On the other hand, the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, said last Wednesday, October 17, that the municipality of Cartagena is prepared to deal with this meteorological situation thanks to the cleaning of ravines by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura and the Consistory;
and a special device for firefighters, police and brigades that will remain coordinated with the Emergency Center of the Autonomous Community.
In addition, before these warnings and to guarantee safety, some of the sports events planned for the weekend, such as the Local Football League, among others, have been suspended.
