A score of experts will analyze the economic diversification in marine reserves in Cartagena (18/10/2018)

The workshop, 'Analysis of economic diversification in marine reserves', will bring together in Cartagena a score of experts who investigate this area.

The workshop will be held at the Interpretation Center of the Punic Wall this Friday, October 19, starting at 9:00 am.

To present this workshop to the media, on Thursday, October 18, the Councilor for the Environment, Manuel Mora, appeared;

the member of WWF, José Luis García and the person in charge of the Pleamar Project, Jorge Sáenz.

The workshop, 'Analysis of economic diversification in marine reserves', will bring together in Cartagena a score of experts from around the country to develop the guidelines to analyze the socio-economic impact of marine reserves in Spain.

The activity is promoted by the Biodiversity Foundation within the Mar de Gades Project of the Pleamar Program.

The Councilor for the Environment has highlighted that the place chosen to hold this workshop "could not be better, because Cartagena is the only municipality in the entire national territory that has two marine reserves, that of Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas and the recently denominated of Cabo Tiñoso ".

Mora has also indicated that "marine reserves of fishing interest are an example of management to achieve sustainable exploitation of resources, establishing protection measures in delimited areas of traditional fishing grounds."

The benefits of these marine reserves, according to the councilman, "are undeniable."

The first is the significant recovery of the fishing grounds caused by the dispersion of the species, as is the case of Cabo de Palos, which since the declaration of 1995 has increased the catches significantly.

The good results of declaring an area as a marine reserve are not only visible in the sector, since the whole is recovered.

The mayor of Environment has set as an example Cabo de Palos, "the socio-economic benefits, in the case of Cabo de Palos, are also visible in diving tourism.

The diving centers generate an economic benefit much higher than that of fishing.

It is estimated that in this coastal town generates 3 million euros a year directly for the practice of this sport, and another 8 million does so indirectly ".

Mora has indicated that "these successes must be managed with sustainability criteria.

To achieve this goal it is necessary to organize forums such as the workshop to be held in Cartagena. "

The workshop, 'Analysis of economic diversification in marine reserves' will gather experts at the Interpretation Center of the Punic Wall will host the meeting this Friday, October 19.
