The Youth Council, through the Youth Space, made it possible for twelve young people from Cartagena to develop a professional and linguistic experience in the United Kingdom.
During the past month of June they left for England in order to live a work experience abroad, an opportunity that they have been able to enjoy thanks to the Expeura Program.
Of the twelve participants who have finally completed their experience a total of ten, two had to resign from the program for personal reasons.
Of the young people who continued with experience seven, their participation period ended in September, which has been extended to three months, and three still continue in the United Kingdom, working out of the Expeura Program.
The councilman of area, David Martinez, has been very satisfied with the result of this first experience and has made progress that is already working on the next edition of the program.
"We are very happy with the success of this first edition and convinced that both the seven who have returned to Cartagena and the three who remain in the United Kingdom have made great progress with their English levels, which will help them to be more competitive in the labor market, "said the councilman.
All have worked and resided during the three months of the program in hotels of the Bay Hotels & Leisure hotel chain located in different parts of the United Kingdom, occupying different jobs, according to their level of English.
After their experience, everyone agrees that the best thing about the hotels has been the work colleagues and the experience itself.
For some of them the most complicated thing has been to adapt to the English culinary schedules and habits.
Regarding the type of work done, they all think that they have adapted to the dynamics of the hotel, even though they have dealt with jobs that were not among their favorites.
Most of them think that "the experience has been very positive and they have learned what the working world really is like".
In this sense, everyone agrees that they have acquired skills and abilities that will be very useful in future work.
Regarding the degree of achievement of the main objective of the Expeura Program, improving language skills, all agree that they return with a higher level of English, increased oral comprehension and greater fluency when communicating.
In this sense, the ten participants are clear that they must continue with their English studies, not to lose what they have acquired or to keep moving forward.
Except one of the participants, who at the time of the evaluation had not decided what he was going to do, the rest is divided 50% between looking for work and resuming or starting formal studies.
Start a master's degree, university studies or Higher Degree are the current occupations of three of them.
The three participants who have not returned to the completion of the Expeura Program highlight the great opportunity they are experiencing and continue to make their experience great until they decide the date of their return.
The City of Cartagena, through the Department of Youth, aware of the difficulty of the young population to access the labor market, has launched the Expeura Program, in order to provide young Cartagena with professional experience in countries of speaks English, along with the possibility of perfecting the knowledge of the language.
The Expeura Program pursues three fundamental objectives that are to promote the personal and professional development of young people, promote their access to the labor world and develop their linguistic skills.
The program involves young beneficiaries of the National Youth Guarantee System who wish to have an opportunity to improve their English skills and develop job skills in a foreign country, be of legal age, pass a selection process that will be common, face-to-face, unique and mandatory for all applicants and accept the conditions of participation and express their commitment.
