The researcher Mª Carmen Martínez Victoria, who developed her doctoral thesis at the Cátedra Cajamar de Cooperativismo Agroalimentario of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), has received the second CIRIEC prize for the best doctoral thesis, awarded by the Scientific Committee of the XVII Congress of Researchers in Social and Cooperative Economy, for their thesis entitled 'Understanding Spanish agri-food cooperatives: Empirical analysis from economic, financial and interorganizational'.
The objective of the doctoral thesis has been to analyze the behavior of agri-food cooperatives from an economic, financial and inter-organizational perspective.
The results obtained indicate that the behavior of agri-food cooperatives is similar to that of other companies in the sector, revealing that differences in their management do not make them less competitive.
The thesis also shows that the proximity effect makes the productivity of the cooperatives is influenced by their geographical context.
In addition, cooperatives that enter into alliances with other companies that are geographically close, benefit from these relationships by increasing their productivity.
Therefore, "alliances between cooperative companies should be encouraged to strengthen their position in the market", explains Mª Carmen Martínez, professor at the Department of Economics and Business at the University of Almería,
The researcher obtained the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in the Administration and Business Management Program of the UPCT.
The court was formed by experts from the universities of Wageningen (Netherlands), Polytechnic of Valencia and Polytechnic of Cartagena.
The thesis directors were Mariluz Maté Sánchez-Val and Narciso Arcas Lario, director of the Cajamar Chair of Agroalimentary Cooperativism - UPCT.
The award ceremony took place during the XVII Congress of Researchers in Social and Cooperative Economy, recently held at the University of Castilla-La Mancha.
