The Archaeological Museum of Cartagena descends to the Almadenes canyon to show its rock art and its archeology (09/10/2018)

The Archaeological Museum of Cartagena Enrique Escudero de Castro opens its doors on Tuesday, October 9, to 'More than caves.

Rock Art and Archeology in the Almadenes' canyon.

The traveling exhibition, which has already gone through Murcia, shows the important set of cave paintings that this natural space hosts, accompanied by a set of archaeological materials from the excavations carried out in the Cueva del Arco and La Serreta, and El Pozo.

The sample can be visited until November 9.

'Mas que cuevas' is organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture in collaboration with the University of Murcia and the city of Cartagena.

The councilor of Archaeological Heritage of the City of Cartagena, David Martínez, attended the presentation;

his counterpart in the Town Hall of Cieza, Antonio Moya;

and the three comisasios of the exhibition: Joaquín Lomba, Joaquín Salmerón, and Ignacio Martín, besides the coordinator of Archaeological Heritage of the City of Cartagena, Mari Carmen Berrocal, and other museum directors such as Luis de Miquel and Miguel Martín, as well as archaeologists and members of the project that was presented.

The Almadenes canyon is known for hosting an unusual concentration of postpaleolithic rock art, with twenty caves with Levantine and schematic art, but also with the only three examples of regional paleolithic art, in just 400 hectares.

The mayor of Archaeological Heritage, David Martínez, explained that "the sample is the result of intense work done in the framework of a research project carried out for three years in the Los Almadenes canyon, after the devastating fire that, in August 2015, affected this space. "

This project has allowed a better knowledge of the archeology of the canyon and what its rock art means, an art recognized as a World Heritage Site, as an opportune bet for the revaluation and social diffusion.

Martinez has also announced that "more caves and cavities have been located with the aim of finding new paintings, as it has been, updating the Paleolithic art information with the use of new technologies".

The mayor also recalled that this project has allowed the excavation of Cueva del Arco.

The exhibition brings together images with great resolution never seen, as is the case of a life-size photograph of the more than six meters of rock art on the main panel of La Serreta, in which in addition to its well-known representation of schematic art of the 'Idol ', you will be able to see the latest discoveries discovered thanks to new technologies.

The exhibition also has a set of archaeological materials from the excavations carried out in the Cueva del Arco, La Serreta, and del Pozo, as well as explanatory panels and experimental archeology instruments such as fire or painting tools.

More than caves can be visited at the Archaeological Museum of Cartagena Enrique Escudero de Castro from October 9 to November 9, from Tuesday to Friday: from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. hours, and Saturdays and Sundays: from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Mondays and holidays will be closed.

Admission is free.
