The Roman Theater of Cartagena, the Baroque altarpiece of the Church of Santo Domingo, also in Cartagena, the rehabilitation of the old Apprentice School of Bazán or the industrial heritage of the Sierra Minera de La Union are some of the topics that have been discussed during the first day of the XXIV Conference of Cultural Heritage of the Region.
This is a conference that the Community and the UPCT recover after five years without being held and that this time will be held in Cartagena, Yecla, Blanca and Murcia during the month of October.
The conference, which has 80 participants, has been open to the participation of all those interested in the dissemination of research works and restoration and conservation of heritage interventions, with the presentation of communications that will be included in the program of the days as in the minutes book, whose digital version can be downloaded for free on the website www.jornadaspatrimonioculturalrm.es.
In total, more than fifty scientific texts will be presented.
During the inauguration, the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), Alejandro Díaz Morcillo, stressed that the idea of this conference is that citizens "discover better" the heritage of the region and commit to recovery and implementation value of the heritage.
In this sense, Díaz Morcillo stressed that the UPCT has recovered throughout its 20 years of history, three historic buildings of the eighteenth century and had military use, referring to the former Marina Hospital, current headquarters of the Technical School of Industrial Engineering;
the barracks of Antiguones, whose building currently houses the studies of the Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering and the one that was the Mariner's Training Headquarters, which was rehabilitated to house the Faculty of Business Sciences;
in addition to the rehabilitation of the House of Mercy, which is now the headquarters of the Rector of the UPCT.
In addition, the Rector pointed out that the School of Architecture and Building Engineering of the University celebrates ten years being "one of the most prestigious in Spain and showing interest in moving forward and in organizing and participating in conferences of this kind."
For its part, the Minister of Culture, Miriam Guardiola has detailed that these days are recovered "in a year in which we commemorate the European Year of Cultural Heritage with many initiatives."
In this sense, he highlighted the variety of topics that will be addressed, "the result of the rich heritage of the Region", since not only will the historical, architectural or archaeological heritage be discussed, but it will be put on the table, example, the reality of gastronomic, documentary, sound, cinematographic, textile and intangible heritage.
CASTILLEJO DE MONTEAGUDO
During the day, graduates of the UPCT have presented their final projects of Degree and Master linked to the conservation of the cultural heritage of the Region.
This is the case of the technical architect of the UPCT, María José Serrano, who has studied the conservation of Islamic wall structures in seismic zones, specifically the Castillejo de Monteagudo.
According to the young woman, if there were an earthquake like the one that took place in Lorca, the walls of this building would not be affected.
Serrano explains that being an asset of Cultural Interest, the structure has had to study "from the theory", but by applying a virtual simulation on how it would affect an earthquake, it is found that "damage could occur, but not the structure would collapse ", reason why it warns that" it would not be necessary "the intervention in this sense.
However, it does point out that in the building there would be damages, fissures and perhaps some detachment in the walls.
