The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, and the personal friend of the family, Tomás Díaz Lago, discovered this Saturday, October 6, on the skateboard of the Urban Sports Park on Carrer Carlos III, a plaque of recognition of the heroic performance of the young Ignacio Echeverría Miralles de Imperial, murdered in London in June 2017, when he confronted terrorists who tried to stab a woman and other bystanders.
The tribute was unanimously agreed by the Municipal Corporation and has coincided with the celebration of the Urban Fest, which brings together all lovers of art, culture and urban sports, such as skateboarding, of which Echeverría was a great aficionado.
In him they have been present, in addition, the councilman of Culture and Youth, David Martinez Noguera, next to the municipal spokesmen Francisco Mirror and Manuel Padín, and the councilmen, Carolina Palazón, Esperanza Nieto, Diego Ortega and Francisco Calderón.
In her speech, the mayor recounted and praised the courageous performance of Ignacio Echeverría and how he came over his skateboard quickly in aid of the woman who was being attacked by the terrorists, constituting an icon and an example for all the skaters.
He has also mentioned the special kindness of Ignacio and the spirit of rebellion, solidarity and camaraderie that have fans of these sports such as skateboarding and which gave good account with his heroic performance in the terrorist attack, which cost him his own life .
For his part, Tomás Díaz Lago, who by the express wish of the family has represented them, thanked the tribute and highlighted the deep religious convictions of Ignatius and that led him to do and act always in the way that he believed was the correct, hoping that this plaque serves as testimony and example.
The event, which has come to join the many awards received in recent months both nationally and internationally, has been developed within the framework of the Cartagena Urban Fest that this morning has developed numerous activities of art, culture and urban sport, both in the track where the tribute took place, and in the parking lot of the former Administrative Building on the street of Sister Francisca Armenzáriz, organized by the Youth Council of the City of Cartagena.
