The Hall of Reception of the Palace Hall hosted this Wednesday, October 3, the official presentation of the initiative Walks on wheels, which is a voluntary group with the aim of assisting, supporting and promoting accessibility for people with reduced mobility to Leisure activities and free time.
The presentation was given by the Mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, who has been accompanied by the General Directorate of Family and Social Policies, Miriam Pérez;
the president of the association Zancadas sobre ruedas, Teresa Rodríguez;
the Vice Chancellor of Students, University Extension and Sports, Sergio Amat;
and the director of the business area of ​​CaixaBank in Cartagena, Carlos Merelo.
The mayor highlighted the beautiful and important birth of the association, in which most of the volunteer members are athletes and facilitate other people to practice sports, as well as "unsuspected possibilities" to participate with their colleagues in outdoor activities and that families can carry out activities such as excursions to the mountains or the beach.
The first mayor has recognized the silent and almost invisible work of this association, which makes possible a more accessible and inclusive space, while at the same time has highlighted the pride that supposes for Cartagena to have a grouping of these characteristics.
For her part, Teresa Rodríguez thanked the support of other associations of the Region of Murcia that have supported and collaborated in this project, such as ASTUS, ONCE, Red Cross, FAMU and ADISLU, among others.
Rodriguez has put the focus on the altruistic character of the initiative and has pointed out that the objective is to break barriers and fulfill dreams through his volunteers, "who are huge hearts that make this great" with the help of "his coat of superheroes ", the joelette chair.
Also, Carlos Merelo has pointed out "the special thing" that is the people who are part of the association, and has underlined the commitment of the Obra Social La Caixa with this type of projects, since last year he dedicated a budget of 10 million euros to the Region of Murcia.
Finally, AMAT has indicated that the UPCT is a privilege to put its name in a project that joins sport and volunteering, while it has named the student period, as a stage with a lot of energy in which many volunteers are born.
