"Give us the means to make the most of our resources."
With these words, Alejandro Díaz Morcillo, rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), today called on political representatives to commit themselves with concrete proposals to support the University and its social action.
Díaz, in the Act of Opening of Course of the public universities of the Region has asked: "Create the bases for that system of Science-Technology-Society, with the essential participation of the University, that works for years in the most developed and that is the engine of their social and economic progress ".
The rector of UPCT has called for "strengthening internal controls as a first step to end dishonest and even criminal behavior that has surfaced in the university community."
Diaz has highlighted "the great injustice that is committed to extend the veil of doubt over the entire Spanish university, especially when we must not forget that the supply, delivery and quality of university degrees has never been so controlled, so controlled by external agents. like now".
Among the novelties of the academic course, Díaz Morcillo has referred to the implementation of the degree in Tourism in bilingual format and the own Master in Industry 4.0, "to train professionals in sectors that, together with agri-food, should be the main drivers of the regional economy. "
The Rector, before the more than 300 invited representatives of the various sectors of society, has also referred to the need for actions based on university-company-administration collaboration to discuss the role of the university in the development of innovation ecosystems and attract international talent to our universities and companies.
Díaz has emphasized that the UPCT is the Polytechnic University of the Region of Murcia and contributes to the development of the entire Region.
20 years doing Region
Regarding the impact of the UPCT in the society of Cartagena and the Region in these 20 years, the Rector has referred to the takeoff in knowledge generation, with more than 5,000 scientific publications;
the connection with companies, in which more than 5,000 students have practiced since 2008 or scientific, technological and cultural dissemination.
He also quoted the University of the Elderly in which more than a thousand people have registered in these years.
The Rector has said that the main efforts for this course will be aimed at improving teaching quality, internationalization and the connection with society in the Region.
"Connection that we want to specify in the offer of titles of strategic interest for the Region and the intensification of our collaboration with companies and entities, the training of our students for employment and the continuation of the dissemination effort".
Díaz has announced other actions that will be developed this course, such as the project 'Quiero Ser Ingeniera', the start of the construction of the new headquarters of the ETSAE (Higher Technical School of Engineering and Building) and the project for the new University Residence.
At the same time he mentioned the reform of the Statutes of the UPCT and the definition of a Strategic Plan for the quinquennium 2021-2025.
