It was the year 1980 when a group of friends, among whom was Paco Martín, formed the collective Harlequin;
a group of jazz lovers, who managed a bar with the same name in the port city, and decided to set up the first Jazz Festival of Cartagena.
Since then Paco Martín, recently deceased, has directed and scheduled all his editions.
The 38 ° Cartagena Jazz Festival is the latest program that Martín created.
The festival, which will be held from November 2 to 24, will be presented next week and will feature a poster that recalls the figure of its creator.
"Cristina Gil has designed the poster for the 38th edition of the festival, where a figure reminiscent of Paco Martín appears, holding up a hat as if bidding farewell to all of us." A sign where you can also see piano keys, an instrument that Paco played , and with which the City of Cartagena we want to remember and honor the creator of this festival "has indicated the Councilor for Culture of the City of Cartagena, David Martínez Noguera.
"Paco Martín left the programming of this edition that the Council of Culture is going to carry out as he left off, it is an excellent program, which we will present next week, like all Martín has done throughout his career, and that has led this city to be a cultural reference in our country, "said Martinez Noguera.
"For Cartagena, and thanks to the work of Paco Martín, have passed all the great figures of jazz as Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Diana Krall, Branford Marsalis, John McLaughlin, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Pat Metheny, Chic Korea, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tete Montoliu, McCoy Tyner, Michael Nyman, Archie Sheep, Stéphane Grappelli ... "recalled the Councilor for Culture of Cartagena.
"In the 80s, when the festival was created, jazz was experiencing a moment of explosion in Spain and the audience that attended concerts was the majority, and in the nineties, the festival was on the verge of disappearing due to the scarce influx of the concerts, so that it would not be so, Paco Martín gave a return to the festival and with the arrival of the new millennium he began to make more eclectic programs, where other genres were included, and whose result was positive, since it began Once again, during the last decade, the public's response has been very positive and the Cartagena Jazz Festival has now recovered a young audience that has made the festival rejuvenate and once again have an audience of around ten thousand spectators in each edition. " , recalls David Martínez. This edition of the festival will be held, as usual, at the Nuevo Teatro Circo and the auditorium El Batel, and will go out again with concerts in the square
of the Ãcue.
It continues with the collaboration with bars in the city: El Cuervo, Mr. Witt and El Soldadito de Plomo.
And there will be a lindy hop workshop and swing dance.
All the details and the complete schedule will be announced next week.
