The lack of concretion and decision on water issues of the new socialist Executive puts obstacles to the development of the agrarian sector in Cartagena
If in the last four years the Government of the Popular Party lacked decision to implement measures to save the water deficit, the model of exploitation and cultivation of the lands of the Region of Campo de Cartagena and the municipality, now the socialist government can leaving in the background the main source of wealth and economy in the area, such as agriculture.
However, the already known water deficit that suffers the basin of the Segura, now has been added the environmental disaster of another economic pillar such as the Mar Menor, which after not paying attention in 25 years, is blamed its poor state the malpractice of agriculture in the area.
In this matter, all the state organisms allude to a bad management of the use of the little existent subterranean water for irrigation, like to a bad practice of agrarian works.
For this reason, the agrarian sector has been the first to take a step forward by offering its collaboration with official bodies, but these have not corresponded as expected.
COAG and FECOAM made this known to the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, through a meeting held at the Town Hall.
Lack of concretion
For the president of MC Cartagena, Jesus Giménez, "at the little decision of the PP in recent years in search of solutions, now we must add the lack of concreteness of the new socialist executive to take action, as shown by the inaccurate decisions of the minister Teresa Ribera to grant water transfers, which by law
they correspond, and because of the scarce current water reserves there is no doubt about carrying them out ".
"If the PP also did not comply with the decree of drought that has been applied in the last four years, where alternative solutions should be sought to safeguard the agricultural sector with their own resources, and after a long processing of the records of the wells of drought, farmers are still placed obstacles from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), it is an unsustainable situation, "says Jesús Giménez.
For the president of MC, "this together with the obstacles that are put to the implementation of the results obtained in the investigations carried out in the farm Tomás Ferro, in order to seek remedy to the treatment of nitrates of groundwater for use in agriculture, they show the lack of interest of the Government ".
Environmental development of the Region
On the contrary, MC has shown throughout this term to bet on the agricultural sector and its integration in the environmental development of the Comarca and municipality of Cartagena, as the Cartagena training is convinced that both concepts can be carried out as long as they are given weapons to develop them.
Without going any further, for Giménez "on the subject of the investigation, MC advanced to make the groundwater suitable for irrigation, because together with the Tomás Ferro Foundation, of which the City is an employer, and the UPCT was put in practice the chair of agriculture to achieve the denitrification of groundwater, despite the obstacles imposed by the CHS ".
"In addition, MC has requested alternative water resources in different municipal plenums, demonstrating its involvement with farmers," concludes Jesús Giménez.
In this regard, it should be noted that the lack of water resources is added to the measures approved for the protection of the Mar Menor, where the District of Cartagena is the largest affected by having the largest stretch of land off the coast.
This leads him to reduce the production system by 40% of the 15,000 hectares of irrigated land he currently has, with the consequences that this entails from a lower supply of product to the market.
