The proximity to shopping centers and business estates increases the value of small and medium enterprises, according to the business valuation model proposed by Paolo Occhino's thesis at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).
The contribution of the Italian researcher, who came to the Polytechnic to carry out the Master in Accounting and Corporate Finance thanks to the INPS scholarship, complements the classical methods of business valuation in cases, very common among SMEs and young companies, in which there are no time series of results.
"How is the future benefit of a new company estimated?" Argues Occhino, who remembers the importance of these valuations during periods of economic crisis.
"Our model, which takes into account the size, age and technology of the company, as well as the average valuation of neighboring companies, achieves results similar to those of the traditional method", explains the thesis director, Mari Luz Maté .
The effect of localization on the valuation of companies is part of the line of research based on georeferenced information of the research group of the UPCT Economic Modeling and Non-Parametric Statistic, distinguished by its excellence by the Seneca Foundation, which has financed expenses of the thesis.
Recently, another thesis of the group found that the results of the companies are linked to those of their neighbors.
"The spatial model is also being used in the valuation of housing," says Maté.
The Sicilian Paolo Occhino has completed his doctoral research with European mention, so he had to present his thesis in two languages, English and Spanish, different from his mother tongue.
Enchanted with Cartagena and his "hospitality", he is currently a fellow of a Roman research center, since he got thanks to be doing his doctorate.
"The opportunity to do a master's degree abroad is one that can not be missed," he comments, recalling his first stay at UPCT, "and I did not want to regret not doing a doctorate," he adds.
