Therapeutic architecture, this is how the final academic work of Virginia Monreal Martínez can be defined in the UPCT, a psychiatric hospital intertwined with the natural environment in full Vega Alta del Segura.
The student of the degree in Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena has designed for Cieza a center with a view to its famous flowering convinced that "the color and the nature are fundamental to cure mental illnesses".
The Murcian student proposes with her final degree project, which she has just presented at the School of Architecture and Building, to respond to the needs of the mentally ill in the North of the Region and to banish the feeling of seclusion of the psychiatric centers with a center in "nature enters the building" through multiple courtyards and in which patients have abundant natural light thanks to a multitude of skylights.
"Even in the nuclei under surveillance there are courtyards, so they do not feel they are in a prison," argues the young architect, whose work has been directed by Juan Pedro Sanz.
The property is designed to be located on the Ronda de Cieza promenade, next to the Segura river and with views of the colorful vegetable gardens that surround the town and the Morón and Atalaya hills.
