Cs Cartagena denounces that Los Remedios is still not included in the European Cemeteries Network (10/08/2018)

- Citizens will ask for explanations in the next ordinary plenary session on this issue, and for the lack of execution of the Master Plan for Protection and Valorization of the Cemetery of Our Lady of Remedies

Citizens has denounced today that the Municipal Cemetery of Los Remedios still does not belong to the Association of Significant Cemeteries of Europe (ASCE), and therefore this graveyard is still not included in the great European network of funeral patrimony, in spite of the affirmed by the local government of the PSOE.

The orange training could verify this point when yesterday the ASCE Secretariat sent a letter to the Municipal Citizens Group in which they confirmed that the Cartagena cemetery, in spite of fulfilling all the required requirements, is not yet a member of the association because the City Council of Cartagena has not paid since April the annuity of 2018 which has an amount of 700 euros.

The councilor of Citizens in Cartagena, Ana Rama, recalled that, to questions from the Group of Citizens, the socialist spokeswoman, Obdulia Gómez assured in plenary session, and this is reflected in the minutes of that Plenary, that the Cemetery of Santa Lucia already found since March 20 within the network, "but it is not true, and we are outraged that try to get around the questions that we groups are grossly missing a truth easily testable, we imagine that on March 20 informed the City Council that our cemetery It met all the conditions to be included in the network, but until we pay the annual invoice it will not be effective. "

Rama recalled that the adhesion to this network emanates from a plenary agreement promoted by Citizens in October 2015, "three years is costing us to run our initiative," lamented the council.

The European Route of Cemeteries, constituted by the Association of Significant Cemeteries of Europe (ASCE), aims to raise awareness of the great European funerary heritage, promoting cultural tourism with the offer of new spaces, and establishing new links of collaboration between European countries and regions.

It currently includes the 179 most important cemeteries in 22 countries and its objective is to promote the restoration of the funerary landscape, to turn these spaces into a tool of knowledge and continuous research, and to operate with a clear educational vocation for schools to incorporate it into their cultural visits in a dynamic and pedagogical way.

One of the objectives is to offer a cultural product where, in a unique way, history, art, memory and nature are intertwined, through tours of great variety and cultural richness.

"From Ciudadanos we consider that the Cemetery of Our Lady of the Remedies, one of the best testimonies of the history of Cartagena and the first monumental cemetery of the Region, must and deserves to be integrated into this network because it would promote the funerary heritage of the city by placing it at the same level as other European aristocrats of great historical and artistic importance, "explained the orange mayor, Ana Rama, who argues that" the situation of continued degradation and plundering have forced us, before the Government's sloppiness, to propose this sheet of route to dignify this Cartagena treasure ".

The Master Plan in a drawer

Citizens will ask at the next Plenary for the development of the actions contemplated in the Master Plan for Protection and Valorization of the Cemetery of Our Lady of Remedies.

In December 2017, the local government announced that it had completed this plan which, among other things, foresees the recovery of the Pedreño Pantheon, the creation of a website, security measures, the edition of a tourist catalog, a book of dissemination, the printing of explanatory brochures and placement of signage indicative of the most outstanding graves, such as the immortal engineer Isaac Peral, the painter Wsell de Guimbarda, the bullfighter Enrique Cano, the romantic poet José Martínez Monroy and also the merchants Juan Crespo and Manuel Picó , the industrial Andrés Pedreño, the Dorda family or the Aguirre family, or personalities such as Celestino Martínez.

"We only have proof of the repainting of the perimeter fence of the Pantheon of Pedreño, nothing more," says Ana Rama.
