A student of the UPCT proposes to change the streetlights of the center of Cartagena to LED to save energy (07/08/2018)

The installation of streetlights with LED technology along with other improvements in urban lighting in the streets of the historic center of Cartagena would achieve great energy savings, according to a Final Work of the Master in Science and Technology of Building Architecture Eugenia Rodenas Morcillo, tutored by Josefina García León and Gemma Vázquez Arenas.

The student has carried out a lighting study for the streets of Carmen, Jabonerías, Santa Florentina and San Roque, in which she proposes to install some seventy lamps with LED technology.

The work has included the virtual simulation of how the illuminance of the streets would change according to the different models that it considers in its proposal

The change to technology would mean a reduction of the current overlighting, which greatly exceeds the requirements of municipal regulations, and would achieve a huge reduction in electricity consumption, as well as the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of electricity, achieving a significant increase in energy efficiency.

Thus, the annual cost to the City Council of the lighting of these streets would go from the current 4,808 euros to between 400 and 500 euros with the different models of LED luminaires.

The change in lampposts would require an investment of between 55,000 and 92,000 euros, which would be amortized in between 13 and 21 years thanks to the savings in the electricity bill.

"Any of the three possible solutions would greatly improve the present installation, with average illuminance levels between the minimum and maximum values established by the most up-to-date application regulations for pedestrian routes," says student Eugenia Ródenas.

"We have sought new designs of facilities that respect the environment, with lighting levels consistent with current regulations and appropriate to the current use of these streets, and without traffic," says the teacher of the School of Architecture and Building , Gemma Vázquez.

"The work shows that the development of lighting project using simulation tools allows a more adequate development and better adapted to the needs of the lighting avoiding cost overruns in the installation, in its maintenance and its subsequent use over time. ", Concludes the also professor Josefina García.
