On May 23, 2017, José López (MC), within the scope of his responsibilities as mayor of Cartagena, signed a collaboration agreement between the City Council and the Association of Veteran Friends of the Cartagenero Castles, its Fortresses, Walls, Old Towers and Batteries of Cartagena (AFORCA) for the rehabilitation of the mountain and fortress of Despeñaperros.

Under the agreement signed, AFORCA would be responsible for the rehabilitation of the Fortress 'Caballero de Despeñaperros'.

Thus, would invest the 435,000 euros consigned in the judicial offices, thanks to a ruling of the Superior Court of Justice in favor of this association for a lawsuit against the City Council, at that time ruled by the PP.

It should be remembered that, in this ruling, the group that claimed responsibility for the illegality of municipal action in the Wall of Carlos III was given reason to include a wooden auction along the perimeter of the wall.

However, given the impossibility of executing the sentence, which obliged the Consistory to shoot down the auction, the compensation to AFORCA was determined with the payment of that amount, which was deposited with the Court awaiting guarantees at its destination.

In this context, last January, both City Council and AFORCA delivered to the Court the preliminary draft of the agreement that plans the restoration as a viewpoint of the Despeñaperros castle and the adaptation of accesses as the first phase.

However, since then, nothing has been known in relation to the alleged progress, so the councilor of the MC Cartagena municipal group, Ricardo Segado, will ask in the next plenary session on "what stage of processing is the first phase of the project Adaptation of access to the hill of Despeñaperros ".

He has continued to state that "we want to know if the funds have already been released by the Superior Court of Justice to begin the work."

Segado has demanded that "continuity be given to the recovery project of the Fort of Despeñaperros, initiated during our time in the Mayor's Office".

"The patrimonialists wish that the beginning of the work for the recovery of a new fortress for the city be accelerated as soon as possible, and to do it in the most approximate way to its original configuration, in order to divulge its history and that it can be visited" , it is finished.
