- "It does not seem reasonable to undertake a new expansion without first improving the current deposits and modernizing the facilities for recycling and separation because otherwise, we will never close the vicious circle that occurs when the lack of improvements, a reception of waste higher than the foreseen and the deficient separation of waste in origin causes the logical early clogging of the vessels and the drastic reduction of the useful life of the landfill ... which will force a new expansion ", explained the spokesman of the orange formation in Cartagena, Manuel Padín
Cartagena, Wednesday, August 1.
The spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, visited the Urban Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal Facilities of Cartagena in the El Gorguel area and met with the plant's service head, Antonio Fernández.
During the meeting, the orange spokesman was able to collect all the needs of the landfill, "we have been told that more staff is needed to maintain the treatment machines and modernize many of their facilities to improve the separation of waste, reduce the percentage of rejects and optimize the separation of waste in order to achieve a level of recycling that is close to what is required by the Autonomous Community and Europe ", said Manuel Padín who recalled that the European Commission has marked that in the year 2020 the level of reuse and recycling is 50%, and 65% by 2030, when in Cartagena we are only at 15%;
that is, we have a lot of work to do to catch up, and for that challenge we have no choice but to join forces between the regional administration, the local administration and the company that manages this matter. "
The spokesman for Citizens has been able to visit some of the areas and learn more about its operation, among others, the line that separates the rolling organic remains, flat and light, the magnetic system to separate the metal elements, and the optical system to distinguish high density plastics and polyethylenes.
Expansion of the landfill stuck in the Environment
Regarding the planned extension of the Dos Amigos landfill, the head of FCC has informed that they are currently trying to solve a problem with the General Directorate of the Environment with the border of a protected area LIC and ZEPA, which according to the company would be ill-defined and that it would affect the project of this extension that already suffers a considerable delay.
According to FCC, the current capacity of the landfill is only 3 years, so the expansion is an imperative need that will extend the term of operation to 7 years.
"It does not seem reasonable to undertake the expansion without first improving the current deposits and modernizing the separation and treatment machines because otherwise, we will never close the vicious circle that occurs when the lack of modernization of the facilities, a reception of waste higher than the foreseen and the deficient separation of waste in origin entails the logic of early clogging of the vessels and the drastic reduction of the useful life of the landfill ... which will force a new expansion ".
For all the above, the Municipal Citizens Group will transfer to its Parliamentary Group and the City Council all the information gathered and the need to address this problem as soon as possible in a global manner.
"We leave here with the feeling that the municipal landfill has some challenges ahead that will require a large investment, and we fear that our local and regional administration has not yet made an idea of the magnitude of the problem we have for ahead, "said the orange spokesman who explained that" in three years, this landfill will not have the capacity to store domestic solid waste that could not be recycled or reused with the means currently available to the plant; the future to harsh European sanctions for not complying with the levels of recycling that are expected ".
In the opinion of the spokesman of Cs, "the City must send as soon as possible to the General Directorate of Environment the needs of these facilities, the investments they have made in recent years, and those that are planned to qualify for regional investments and those offered by the European Union through ERDF funds for those plants that meet the selection criteria of the European Union. "
For the orange training, this problem requires a work plan at several levels, "because time eats us, or we react already, or we are going to have to face a crisis in this sector of unpredictable consequences, but that will surely affect our economy and our environment. "
After the visit, the Citizen spokesman thanked the kindness and good willingness of the head of service to address the questions of the Municipal Group, "politicians have two options to companies that manage large municipal contracts, or see them as an opportunity to take another step towards the circular economy by improving the service to Cartagena, or identify them as a threat, a source of conspiracies and problems and therefore harm all Cartagena, we prefer the first.
