The Autonomous Community will transform the Central Cinema of Cartagena into a multifunctional regional library with a scenic space.
That is the most suitable proposal for the space according to the analysis and historical-architectural documentation and study on the best uses for the property, made by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), commissioned by the Ministry.
The possibilities offered by the space, once rehabilitated, were numerous, from exhibition halls, theater, concerts, spaces for alternative arts or the celebration of congresses and social events.
Therefore, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture commissioned a study to the UPCT to determine the cultural infrastructure that best suited the needs of both the city of Cartagena and the entire region.
The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Miriam Guardiola, stressed "the importance of collaboration between institutions and administrations since, together, uniting resources, will and energy, creates the most appropriate space for citizens and for the culture of the Region grow and become an economic engine, tourism and progress. "
Guardiola made these statements after the presentation today of the study in which she was accompanied by the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Díaz, and the professor in charge of the report, Juan Pedro Sanz.
The proposal has been the result of a deductive analysis, which has approached the final proposal, through a process of comparison of similar equipment at the level of architectural typology, equipment at regional, municipal and finally the spatial possibilities offered by the own property.
"Cartagena is a priority for the regional government and recover this space will contribute to the revitalization of this area of the city," said Guardiola, adding that "it will be a nucleus of cultural meeting with other reference facilities such as the Regional Museum of Art Modern, and the Palace of Aguirre, headquarters of the regional government in the city and one of the most important and best preserved modernist buildings of Cartagena.
In the deep diagnosis of the UPCT has been taken into account the fundamental premise that is addressed not only the rehabilitation of the Central Cinema but also the annex building (with the built surface that represents).
For the use of the library, we have analyzed types of libraries, programs that are developed in the libraries of the municipality of Cartagena, viability and cost estimation.
In addition, the draft technical specifications sheet of the contest to adapt the building to the library has been drawn up.
Property distribution
The property, owned by the Autonomous Community since December 2016, has a degree of protection 1. It was built in 1880 by Carlos Mancha to house a market, in 1916 it was used for cultural purposes and is currently the oldest of the they keep dedicated to the exhibition of films.
In 1925, it was renovated by Lorenzo Ros and everything seems to indicate that, after some important works that were made in front of the stalls in 1953, the screen and the original stage are hidden, which would make it one of the cinematographic jewelry nationwide.
