The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, is the second member of the Spanish government to visit Cartagena in a week, first the Minister of Culture did it, and he has done, according to his words, "because Cartagena is a city closely linked to the Navy Spanish and it was essential to come here, as Minister of Defense that I am, to pay tribute to her ".
The first stop of this visit was the Cartagena Arsenal, where he was able to get to know the Tramuntana submarine first-hand and made a tour of the different areas that make up the submarine base.
There, Robles has stated that it is expected that on Friday of this week, or the next as a deadline, it can continue with the construction of the S-80 submarine series, since "the construction of these four submarines is essential so that Spain and its Armed Forces continue with the missions for the attainment of Peace and freedom in the world. "
In addition, it has indicated that the submarines will begin to be delivered in the year 2022 progressively until 2027.
Currently, Spain has three submarines of the S-70 series, of which only one is operational, so, as the minister of defense has stated, "it is absolutely essential for these intelligence operations for peace and freedom in the world that you can have a series of modern submarines that contribute to the role played by the Spanish Armed Forces ".
And, at the moment, Spain is immersed in 15 peacekeeping operations and submarines are playing an important role in the missions that have as their objective the fight against terrorism, among others.
On the other hand, regarding the works that would have to be done in the docks of the Port of Cartagena to be able to house the new ships, the minister has declared that these reforms were already planned in the global project of the S-80, which was carried out in the year 2011, at which point some failures arose in the execution of the initial project, "which are already exceeded and have all the certificates of guarantees and quality", explained Robles.
However, that forecast failure has been the trigger that the submarines, which should have been delivered in 2011 and 2015, will begin to be delivered progressively from 2022 until 2027, according to the minister. .
After touring the facilities of Navantia, and accompanied by the government delegate, Diego Conesa, the owner of Defense has visited, immediately after, the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, in the Palace Hall, where she has signed in the Golden Book of the city, and have been able to deal briefly with other issues, such as the possible construction of the City of Justice in real estate belonging to the Ministry.
In this sense, Castejón noted that "the minister has asked me for time to study this petition that is on her desk, demonstrating once again that Cartagena is on the agenda of the nation's government."
