The Youth Volunteer Field 'Cultural Heritage, everyone's thing' began on Tuesday, July 17.
In this field 24 young people will carry out activities, especially excavation and cleaning in Cueva Victoria, and will do so until July 28.
The activity is one of the 115 that offer Alternative Free Time Program, T-LA this summer, organized by the Department of Youth and which has the collaboration of the Department of Culture and Archaeological Heritage of the City of Cartagena, as well as the General Directorate of Youth of the Autonomous Community of Murcia.
To start the field, a visit was made inside the Victoria Cave, which was attended by the Councilor for Culture, Youth and Archaeological Heritage of the City of Cartagena, David Martínez;
the general director of Youth of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, Francisco Sánchez;
the speleologist, Andrés Ros and the Archaeological Heritage Coordinator of the City of Cartagena, Mari Carmen Berrocal.
During the tour of the cave, all the guests were chatting with students who participate in the field.
Councilman David Martinez took advantage of the occasion to encourage young people to know and enjoy the city.
The mayor also recommended that they take advantage of their stay in the city to attend the concerts of the Festival of the Sea of ​​Music.
The morning was completed with a tour of the murals with faunistic Pleistocene motifs, made in significant places in the surrounding towns: El Llano del Beal, El Estrecho and El Beal.
This type of youth activity is a form of voluntary service, where young people perform selfless work that directly reverts to the community, while offering the possibility of knowing other places and other cultures.
The 24 young people, between 14 and 30 years old, come from all the Spanish territory such as the Basque Country, Galicia, Andalusia, or the Canary Islands.
The boys will volunteer until July 28.
The youngsters will collaborate during the mornings from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the cleaning of certain sections of the original cave, corresponding to rooms and galleries of Cueva Victoria II.
They will also perform various tasks in the Enrique Escudero de Castro Municipal Archaeological Museum in Cartagena, in this way they will have an approximation to the archaeological history and the cultural heritage of the port city.
The works in Cueva Victoria will be completed with workshops, talks, and various leisure activities such as: visits to the Palace, Roman Theater and sports activities in Cabo de Palos
Although the theme of the youth volunteer camps is very varied, in the case of Cartagena, and for the second consecutive year, it has been oriented towards the archaeological heritage.
Last summer was the site of the amphitheater in which the children worked, this time being the site of the deputation of the Beal: Cueva Victoria, where they will perform their volunteering.
Victoria Cave is a paleontological site of international importance, where students can learn, first hand, the great diversity of fauna that shows this place.
A place that was a den of hyenas a million years ago, during the Pleistocene period.
