The plenary hall of the Consistorial Palace was filled this afternoon for the delivery of the Gold Medal of Cartagena to Antonio Bermejo Hurtado, the Worker Cure of Vista Alegre, unanimously granted by the Municipal Corporation.
The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, together with the five spokespersons of the municipal groups and a large part of the councilors;
civil and military authorities, including Admiral Maritime Action, Manuel de la Puente;
the councilor spokeswoman of the Regional Government, Noelia Arroyo;
and the Bishop of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca;
along with presidents of neighborhood councils, trade unionists, neighborhood associations, neighbors and relatives, have embraced the honoree who has been ostensibly excited.
The mayor opened the ceremony to welcome and highlight the services that the Worker Cure of Vista Alegre has always provided in a disinterested manner to the most needy, since more than 50 years ago he arrived in Cartagena and has argued the numerous merits that support the awarding of this medal, one of the highest distinctions awarded annually by the municipality.
In particular, it has highlighted its simplicity, its affable and close character, but also its desire to fight and defend itself in defense of the neighbors and the most needy, which made Vista Alegre get infrastructures and basic and necessary services for its inhabitants.
Castejón has also pointed out the special nature of this gold medal, with which he came to recognize also the movement of the so-called Worker Cures that played a very important role in the last years of the Dictatorship and the Transition.
After reading the concession agreement by the accidental general secretary of the Plenary, the mayor handed him the parchment framed with the certification of this agreement and a golden shield in the city.
The mayor then gave the floor to Pedro Castaño, a seminary companion and also Cura Obrero, today married and with grandchildren.
Castaño who spoke on behalf of the neighbors, friends and people who have lived with Antonio Bermejo during these years, has also reviewed the character of Bermejo always vindicating and fighter, through their diverse experiences, as well as their deep faith.
Both the arrival in the plenary hall of the honoree and the various interventions have been accompanied by prolonged applause towards Antonio Bermejo, who without papers has thanked with choppy words the expressions of affection received, as well as the hospitality he found upon his arrival in Cartagena and has defended the social character of the church that should be directed towards the poor and the most needy, expressing their confidence in the figure of Pope Francis.
At the end of the act that lasted for almost 50 minutes, the Corporation, the authorities and the assistants, posed next to the honoree in the usual souvenir photos.
The great expectation generated has led the City of Cartagena to offer images of the act through a closed circuit television so that people who did not fit in the plenary hall could follow it in an adjoining room.
It has also been broadcasted live on the YouTube channel of the City Council.
