Cartagena commemorates today, July 12, the 145th anniversary of the Cantonal Revolution.
To do this, the Platform for Bi-Provinciality '2es +' has designed a series of activities throughout the day.
The Cantonal Revolution represents a historic episode that is the pride of all Cartagena, the sacrifice of a people in loyalty to ideals of justice: the defense of the federal Constitution of Spain.
This morning, starting at 6:00 am, the first of the acts that has consisted of the ascent to the Atalaya mountain and the hoisting of the cantonal flag before the Castle has begun.
Also, a cannon shot has been made as a staging and memory of the beginning of a Revolution that would lead to the constitution of the Canton of Cartagena.
MC Cartagena, which supports this initiative of historical commemoration, was represented this morning, as well as by members and supporters, by the Secretary General, José López, the secretary of organization, Ángel Tarifa, and the municipal councilor, Ricardo Segado, who participated in the lifting of the cantonal flag.
On the other hand, this afternoon, at the Palacio Consistorial (7:00 pm), there will be a conference on 'The Political and Historical Meaning of the Cantonal Uprising of Cartagena 1873', given by the official chronicler of the city, Luis Miguel Pérez Adán.
The event will be attended by councilors of the MC Cartagena municipal group.
The Canton of Cartagena
The cantonal uprising triumphed in Cartagena, which made the city a stronghold and base of operations of the federalist movement, establishing here the first provisional government of the Spanish Federation.
Cartagena resisted for six months the siege and bombardment of Central Government troops, heroism that lasted from July 12, 1873 until January 12, 1874, date that represents the end of the Canton of Cartagena.
The city was reduced almost to rubble by its determined and unbreakable defense of ideals;
the defense of federalism in the Spanish Republic, as well as the application of diverse policies that would propitiate a very significant advance in social matters.
