The City of Cartagena, through the Area of Quality of Life and Welfare, has launched an awareness campaign to prevent the abandonment of pets, especially in the face of summer, a time when figures are increasing, as can be check with the data of May, month in which 107 abandoned animals have been collected from the public road.
The objective of this campaign, as pointed out by the Councilor of the Area, Obdulia Gómez, is, among others, 'to promote responsible ownership, working on two fundamental points such as the fight against the abandonment of animals and the dissemination of duties and obligations of pet owners. '
To do this, information posters have been placed in the mupis of the municipality.
The important thing is to make the owners aware that leaving, in addition to exposing the animal to difficult conditions, such as suffering from abuse, being mistreated and feeling hungry, cold and loneliness, are also generating a public health problem due to diseases transmitted to humans (zoonosis), by contact in the street with feces or urine of sick animals or by means of bites, where an infected animal can transmit the rabies virus.
In relation to the latter, Obdulia Gómez has stressed that 'from the City we want to disclose the need to be a responsible owner, which keeps your pet in the proper hygienic-sanitary conditions, complying with deworming and mandatory vaccinations, identification with microchip, in addition to the collection of your pet's feces from the public road.
It must be remembered that the current regulations sanctions the mistreatment and abandonment of animals, both criminally and administratively.
In the latter case the fine can range from 6,001 euros to 30,000 euros).
Also, in relation to the welfare of abandoned pets, recently have been held the conference "Rescue in positive", organized by the Federation of Association of Animal Protectors of the Region of Murcia (ANIMUR), with the collaboration of the City of Cartagena and the Association of Neighbors of Galifa, to present the main ethological norms (of behavior of the animals) to take into account when rescuing a dog, transporting it and lodging it.
