The Councilor for the Environment of the City of Cartagena, Obdulia Gómez, attended today Friday the meeting that was held in La Manga to see the operating protocol for the detection of loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta in the coasts of Cartagena, where Rocío Huertas Suanzes, environmental technician of the Regional Office of Protected Areas, technicians of the Department of the Environment, as well as representatives of the Local Police, Civil Protection and the maintenance brigades of beach cleaning participated.
The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is an endangered species that does not habitually nest in the peninsular Mediterranean littoral.
In recent years several episodes of reproduction of sea turtles have been detected in the Spanish coast, being especially significant the number of attempts detected in the summer of 2017 on the beaches of the municipality of Cartagena (more than half of nesting attempts of all the peninsular Mediterranean coast), of which six were in Calblanque and two in La Manga.
In case of detecting a possible turtle nesting, it is recommended:
Call 112
Never stand in front of the field of vision of the turtle and keep a minimum distance of 20 meters with the animal as long as possible.
In case of taking pictures, do not use flash.
Ensure the conditions of tranquility throughout the period of excavation of the nest, put and covered by the turtle.
You have to make sure that nobody comes near and bothers you.
If the turtle is returning to the water, never try to retain it to avoid stressing the animal
Avoid cleaning or altering the trail and / or nest that the turtle has left.
Informative day
On Saturday, June 16, at 7:00 pm, will take place in the Office of the Marine Reserve of Cabo de Palos, a Day of Discovery dedicated to the Detection and Protection of sea turtle nesting.
On the other hand, the General Directorate of the Natural Environment has launched the Network of Volunteers of Sea Turtles in the Region of Murcia, in which municipalities of the regional coast and associations and social and environmental organizations collaborate (ANSE, Asociación Calblanque, Asociación of Neighbors Cobaticas-La Jordana, among others).
The volunteers will make trips in the early morning to try to locate one of these nests, before the influx of bathers.
