- The orange training qualifies the policy of the Community in the management of contaminated soils as harmful, "for months he knows nothing of the plan of regeneration of soils affected by mining, announced by the regional government," recalls the spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín
- Citizens regrets that the municipal agreements on the recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), or on agricultural burning, remain unresolved despite having been approved more than a year ago
After the information published today by the newspaper La Verdad about the study that analyzes the prevalence of certain types of cancer in areas with a greater presence of heavy metals, the Municipal Citizens Group has proposed to its Parliamentary Group that it study to expand the epidemiological study that Health has undertaken to clear doubts and fears among the residents of the Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Union and Mazarrón, as requested by a platform of those affected.
The results of the aforementioned research, carried out by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) and the National Epidemiology Center of the Carlos II Health Institute, maintain that living in areas with greater contamination by heavy metals, such as aluminum, zinc, cadmium, lead or arsenic, may be linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer.
"Despite the fact that the published results may seem alarming, the researchers warn that the study should be read very prudently and not be interpreted as cause and effect", clarified the spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín despite everything , considers it "opportune" that the study initiated by the Epidemiology Service of the General Directorate of Health and Addictions be extended "to make it more profound and extensive".
In this way, Cs echoes the request of the Platform of Affected by Heavy Metals, composed of parents of students and other residents of several locations in Cartagena and La Union, to modify the study that will evaluate the exposure of more of 700 children and parents to heavy metals in Llano del Beal and in the Unionense population of Portmán.
Cs for the decontamination of El Hondón
Citizens spoke a few days ago in the Regional Assembly to Javier Celdrán, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, to explain the reasons why the regional government has not performed any of the actions included in a Cs initiative approved by the Chamber in February 2017, for the adoption of measures for the execution of the project of rehabilitation works of the soils of El Hondón de Cartagena.
According to Manuel Padín, "after 15 years since the end of the industrial activity and despite the repeated announcements made, the works are still not executed and the soil continues to be contaminated."
"The policy of the Community in the management of contaminated soil is a disaster and as an example we have this plan for the regeneration of soils affected by mining, announced by the regional government, of which we have not known anything for months," said Padín.
Municipal agreements ignored
Citizens presented in November 2016 a motion to promote a campaign to raise awareness among citizens about the need to properly recycle Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), promote the involvement of associations and groups, and study the creation of a 'Point Clean 'within the urban core of Cartagena.
This motion was approved in plenary but the local executive has not yet put any measures in place to promote among the neighbors the recycling of this electrical and electronic material that is highly polluting to the environment.
Cs Cartagena recalls that, according to data published by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), a poorly recycled refrigerator emits greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of a car in 15,000 kilometers into the atmosphere;
"What turns the approved motion into a matter of extreme importance and we regret the indifference of the municipal government," said Manuel Padin.
The control of agricultural burns is another of the environmental defenses that Citizens took to the municipal Plenum more than a year ago and that remains unresolved.
In April 2017, as a result of the complaints issued by the residents of Isla Plana-La Azohía for the unbreathable smoke that arises from the burning of stubble in an area near Puig Campillo School, Cs took a motion to toughen requirements for the granting of permits for the burning and treatment of agricultural waste.
The approved motion also contemplated the development of a new model for the authorization of burning agricultural waste that includes a code of good practices for burning, minimizing pollution;
and the study of different alternatives for recycling this waste in order to make its use profitable.
