Former UPCT student Roque Belda is developing smart headphones that detect and prevent hearing problems.
The project is called HealthEar, has been designed by Belda and other students of the master's degree in Bioengineering Engineering of the Valéncia Polytechnic and has won an international award called by semiconductor manufacturers for electronic devices.
Belda, an industrial electronic engineer from the Polytechnic of Cartagena and former member of the association UPCT Maker, explains that the device, which they have already manufactured a prototype, is in the development phase, for which they have the advice of an ENT.
The headphones that have been designed would perform periodic tests of the hearing health of the users to detect pathologies such as otitis early.
"Through a sensor composed of a microphone and a small speaker we measure how the conductivity of sound in the ear evolves to alert of hearing problems", explains Belda.
The device also includes an external microphone with which external noise is captured to automatically adjust the volume of the headphones, avoiding excessive levels that can cause hearing damage.
"The volume should not be the same if you are in a street with traffic or in the library," Belda argues, recalling that several WHO studies predict that hearing problems that currently appear at ages around 60 years old are Anticipate the population of 40 "due to increasing auditory contamination".
The HealthEar team, composed of Daniel Iordanov, Andima Beitia, Javier Silva and Roque Belda, was invited along with the winning teams of the different categories of the contest to Munich, where the awards ceremony was held and they were able to visit the headquarters of the two companies organizers of the contest, in whose companies they will practice thanks to the prize.
