The dream of Julio Ferreira is to make the Camino de Santiago.
It may seem, a priori, a dream within reach of anyone.
But this is not his case, because it is not enough to have enough time or money - besides the will - because Julio has cerebral palsy and reduced mobility.
Now, thanks to the efforts and work of ASTUS and through the project Zancadas sobre Ruedas, with the collaboration of the Town Council of Carttagena, this young Cartagena from Galicia will travel on Monday June 4 to his dream: complete several stages of the Camino de Santiago and get the compostelana.
The project was presented this morning, May 29, the councilor of the area of Quality of Life and Welfare, Obdulia Gómez;
the head of ASTUS, Joaquín Barberá;
the representative of the volunteers of Zancadas sobre Ruedas, Juan Ernesto Peña, together with Julio Ferreira, protagonist of this adventure.
When the volunteers of Zancadas on wheels asked several passengers what was the activity that they would like to do, Julio was clear, as he himself narrated, "I did not hesitate for a second and said that my dream had always been to be able to perform the Santiago's road".
To be able to do it, an expedition of 10 people, two support professionals, and 7 volunteers from the project Zancadas sobre Ruedas will leave for Santiago, in addition to Julio.
Next Monday, June 4, all will be on the way, the team of volunteers will travel by plane from Alicante to Santiago de Compostela.
Julio and his support people will drive from Cartagena;
This vehicle will then serve to transport your usual chair, as well as the luggage.
Once there, the road will start on June 5 from Sarriá and will be carried out in 6 stages, from an average of 20 kilometers a day, to conclude with the arrival in Santiago de Compostela on June 10 and after completing 136 kilometers of the route marked on the French Way.
The 'Joëllette' chair, an essential part of making this project a reality, is a specialized chair for people with reduced mobility to carry out sports events such as races or routes, but it also makes it possible for "accessibility to all activities to be a reality for all people, "said the mayor of Sports, Obdulia Gómez.
For his part, the president of ASTUS, Joaquín Barberá and the representative of Zancadas sobre Ruedas, Juan Ernesto Peña, agreed that Julio put a difficult challenge for all by pointing out that this was his dream, but with hard work they have managed to overcome all the barriers and finally can offer quality support for this project to be undertaken.
Finally, Julio Ferreira has assured that they intend to make a diary through the page of the Facebook social network of Zancadas sobre Ruedas, where they will tell how each stage has gone until reaching the goal, Santiago.
The newspaper will be illustrated with images and videos.
The purpose of the project Zancadas sobre Ruedas is that people with disabilities and with reduced mobility of ASTUS can share group activities, discover places, places, places that are unknown and inaccessible, walk and change of scenery, discover nature and participate in careers, marathons
These facts were previously unthinkable for people with disabilities.
Through this project, the illusions of some 40 travelers have already been fulfilled.
