On the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Museums, this Friday, May 18, coinciding also with the organization of events of the Night of the Museums of Cartagena, the Municipal Archaeological Museum "Enrique Escudero de Castro" incorporates its exhibition halls three new pieces that up to now remained guarded in their museographic funds, coming from other so many archaeological findings made in the urban helmet of the city.
These are three carnations, made of carnelian and very small size, barely a centimeter, used to decorate various objects, although most often these pieces were set in rings of a noble or precious metal, especially gold.
In the Roman world it was usual among the wealthier classes the taste to wear rings decorated by gems or cameos, a hobby or weakness in which important fortunes were reversed and that was very criticized by some writers of the time.
However, the iconography of each of the notches, almost always linked to Greco-Roman mythology, used to reflect a personal message, difficult to unravel, or to identify its owner with the symbols that appear represented in the pieces.
In the first engraving, which comes from a particular donation made to the Museum, appears the figure of Mercury, divinity of commerce.
In a second piece, found during the archaeological excavations carried out in 2005 in the area of ​​the university neighborhood, a centaur appears, a fantastic creature of ancient mythology, closely linked to the Bacchic scenes.
While, the third of the notches, found in the year 2008, in the excavations of the Molinete, we can contemplate the figure of a winged Victory, omnipresent theme in the propagandistic symbolism impelled in the times of the Emperor of Augustus.
