Floppy, the diabetic elephant teaches children to detect the disease with a story in Spanish and Arabic (14/05/2018)

'Floppy, the diabetic baby elephant' helps children understand what diabetes is.

The story of Floppy is an original idea of the Support Group of Mothers of the Association of Diabetics of Cartagena and Shire (SODICAR) and is designed so that children become familiar with the disease, with a language that they feel comfortable with.

The second edition of 'Floppy, the diabetic baby elephant' was presented this Monday, May 14, at CEIP Vicente Ros de Cartagena.

The councilor of Education, David Martínez, and the president of SODICAR, María Dolores García Ros, who have read the story with seven-year-old children, students of a second grade class at the CEIP Vicente Ros, have moved to the center.

"'Floppy, the diabetic little elephant' teaches children very well what diabetes is and what the symptoms are," explained the Councilor for Education, David Martinez.

According to the mayor, the story shows diabetes "in a clear and funny way, with an elephant that shows children that you can lead a normal life if symptoms are detected to treat it."

The first edition of the story was published for the first time in 2007, and after exhausting these 10,000 copies, the Association of Diabetics of Cartagena and District (SODICAR), with the collaboration of the Department of Education of the City of Cartagena has reissued another 1,000 copies.

As a novelty, on this occasion it has also been published in Arabic (750 in Spanish and 250 in Arabic).

In 2015, the need to do it in this language had already been detected and the first edition was translated into Arabic.

The copies of this story are sued throughout Spain, as explained by the president of SODICAR, María Dolores García, the association makes it available to everyone, so that it reaches the entire collective.

The association struggles to give visibility to the disease.

SODICAR also forms and informs about diabetes, so that children are always well taken care of.

According to Garcia this information is necessary because "in Cartagena there are 30,000 people with diabetes, almost 14% percent of the population of which 6%, about 13,000 people, are unaware that they have the disease, hence the importance of detecting the symptoms through information. "

In Spain there are around 35,000 affected children and thinking about them has been written 'Floppy, the diabetic little elephant'.

The sample is distributed by schools, libraries and hospitals, being the first reading they offer to children when they are diagnosed with the disease.

Precisely, it was the Pediatric Service of the Hospital of Santa Lucia that requested SODICAR to be published also in Arabic, seeing the need to understand the illness of the children within this group.

The copy also has its digital format and can be downloaded from the association's website in its version of the story in PDF format.

'Floppy, the diabetic little elephant' also has its video version.
