The neighbors of the Mar Menor have announced mobilizations to demand that urgent measures be taken to save the Mar Menor, since the City of Cartagena supports these mobilizations, while the creation of a Special Plan for the Mar Menor has been requested.
The first demonstration will take place in Murcia on Thursday of next week (May 17), which will be followed by others.
The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, the president of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Cartagena and Region (FAVCAC), Leandro Sánchez, and the president of the Neighborhood Association of Los Urrutias, Severo Sánchez, appeared on Monday, 7 May, at a press conference, to announce these mobilizations to what they consider, "a breach of the promises made by the Regional Government and by the National".
The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Catejón, has appeared, together with the local representatives, to demand a Special Plan for the Mar Menor, which requires the involvement of the Central Government.
"In the Mar Menor there is a great environmental catastrophe such as the Prestige and the Lorca earthquake", which had a budget assigned, from the Central Government, to deal with them.
"Is this situation less serious so that the Government of Spain does not make an extraordinary and exceptional performance?" Castejón asked.
To carry out the Special Plan of the Mar Menor, Castejón explained that it has prompted the socialist parliamentary group in the Congress of Deputies to submit this amendment to the General State Budgets, so that a heading for that purpose is included.
Castejón has also reported that he maintains contacts with European parliamentarians to whom he regularly reports on the situation of the Mar Menor.
The councilor explained that qualifying as "environmental disaster", what happens to the Mar Menor, is not to alarm and harm economic activity in the area.
"We want people to come and visit the wonders of the Mar Menor, an environment where thousands of neighbors live and develop their economic activity throughout the year," clarified the mayor.
The first mayor has clarified that these demands of the session are not new and the Special Commission of the Mar Menor, held at the Regional Assembly on April 16, offered to join forces with other administrations and work together to save the Mar Menor , "Plan all together and with the maximum guarantees, both technical and scientific, the actions aimed at the regeneration of our Mar Menor."
Regarding the summer campaign, the mayor has reported that no representative of the regional government has been in communication with the City Council to explain what measures are going to take or interested in what actions are planned by the City Council.
DEMANDS OF THE NEIGHBORS
For local representatives the alarm voices are not new either, they have been denouncing this situation in the salt lake for more than 30 years, especially in the southern part of the Mar Menor (Punta Brava, Carmolí, Los Urrutias, and Estrella del Mar).
The neighbors feel cheated and no longer trust the words and promises of the regional government, "we are fed up with promises and lies" complained the president of the FAVCAC, Leandro Sánchez, "the seriousness of the Mar Menor deserves to be said things as they are, "and" that this alarm is not to the detriment of the Mar Menor, since the only thing that harms the Mar Menor is not taking necessary measures for its regeneration. "
For this reason, the neighborhood groups believe that the time has come to mobilize again.
The main demands are that before the summer the regional government take the appropriate measures to remove the sludge, mud and dry of the maritime façade of the South Mar Menor, also the completion of the seafront of Los Urrutias, as well as the union of that walk with that of Estrella de Mar.
For his part, the president of the Association of Neighbors of Los Urrutias, Severo Sanchez, explained that in his meeting with the counselor and informed him that, not giving them solutions, did not leave them another way to go out.
The first will be in Murcia, on May 17 at 11:00 am, leaving the headquarters of the Demarcation of Coasts to the Palace of San Esteban, headquarters of the Presidency of the Region of Murcia and the Government Council.
The next rally is scheduled for May 24 in Cartagena, in the Regional Assembly.
The demands will continue on July 21 and August 18, in Punta Brava, Los Urrutias and Carmolí.
