- "With this new information, our Municipal Group is willing to re-submit through the Municipal Plenary a proposal to ensure that our Consistory request the assignment, agree and monitor the security measures under the demarcation of Coasts, and cede the use to social and cultural groups in the area, "announced Manuel Padín, Cs spokesman in Cartagena
Citizens has recalled that in July 2016 requested in the plenary session of the City of Cartagena to carry out the necessary procedures to obtain the total or partial transfer of the Santa Elena Tower with the aim of incorporating that asset into the tourist offer of the Cartagena municipality in the area of Isla Plana-La Azohía, and transfer its management to third parties, neighborhood and cultural groups of the municipality interested in taking care of the property and its surroundings and encouraging visits.
The motion was rejected with the votes against Movimiento Ciudadano and PSOE, and with the abstentions of PP and Podemos.
The orange training spokesman, Manuel Padín, explained that his group "when it believes deeply in an initiative, as it is the case, does not understand the rejection of the ordinary Plenary as a failure or the end of a proposal, but as a message that he warns that the proposal must be better prepared and find more arguments ".
At that time, the government's response came through the socialist councilor, Obdulia Gómez, who said that "we would like to make a feasible project of tourist conditioning of these dimensions, which could be acceptable, but in addition to having the budget we must count with ownership, this City Council can not invest in any type of property that is not owned by the City Council. "
Gómez exposed two problems: its elevated location, about 70 meters above the cliff at the tip of La Azohía, which does not allow mass tourism because of the dangerous environment, and the climb to the tower by a metal spiral staircase in poor condition .
In response to these statements, the orange spokesman reported today that his group has made various arrangements through which he has learned that the Demarcation of Coasts would be willing to grant the cession to the City Council and undertake the necessary work to establish the security measures that require to visit the Tower of Santa Elena, placing methacrylate parapets on the parapet of the terrace and arranging the axis of the spiral staircase, "according to technical demarcation of Coasts these measures are perfectly affordable and would entail a minimum visual impact" , added Manuel Padín who understands that "it is a proposal worthy of study and assessment by the City Council".
For the spokesperson of Cs, "with this new information, our Municipal Group is ready to re-submit through the municipal Plenary a new proposal to get our Consistory request the assignment, agree and supervise the security measures charged to Demarcation of Costas, and cede the use to social and cultural groups in the area ".
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1985, the tower has been restored several times, the last time in 2010 by the Demarcation of Coasts with a cost of 600,000 €, who keeps it closed since then, according to Costas, 'there is no institution or entity that takes charge of it and is committed to manage visits to it, ensuring in a responsible way the proper use of the property, its administration and conservation'.
"We know that there are many social groups and neighborhoods interested in managing this space and therefore, we will continue trying that this executive understands that this important Cartagena heritage, which is in enviable conditions, must be supervised and managed by a group of Cartagena and exploit its tourist attraction and ensure its status, "said the spokesman of Cs.
