The City Council provides 25,000 euros for the development and promotion of the Las Matildes Mine (10/08/2017)

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, and the president of the Sierra Minera Foundation, Juan Miguel Margalef, today proceeded to sign a collaboration agreement for the valorization and tourism development of the Sierra Minera, an act that has Counted with the presence of the Councilor for Tourism, Obdulia Gómez.

Specifically, it includes a municipal contribution of 25,000 euros this year 2017 for the operation and promotion of the Interpretation Center of the Las Matildes Mine as a tourist and cultural resource of the municipality.

In addition, through this agreement, the City Council undertakes to support and facilitate its dissemination by integrating it into the network of tourist resources that form its offer and to ensure the maintenance of the infrastructure of the Center as a municipal building, when more work is required, more Beyond the basic maintenance tasks that will be carried out by the Sierra Minera Foundation.

As the mayor said, this initiative is a way to support the diversification of Cartagena's tourism offer and from there we will work hand in hand and coordinated to generate a first-rate tourism product.

The Foundation, as head of the Interpretation Center of Las Matildes Mine, assumes its management by keeping it open to the public and providing visitors with a quality service of industrial and mining tourism (during this year it will be open to the public on Thursday To Sunday, from 10.00 to 14.00, or outside this time for concerted group visits);

Will maintain it in conditions for its normal operation and will design and signal paths of small routes and eco-cultural itineraries guided by the Sierra Minera.

To this, said Juan Miguel Margalef, we must add that we are already working to incorporate the Interpretation Center of Las Matildes Mine in the European Route of Industrial Patrimony Network (ERIH), making it a reference point for managing routes and visits by The Sierra Mining of Cartagena.

For the president of the Sierra Minera Foundation, the objectives of this project are clear: on the one hand environmental recovery;

On the other, the architectural recovery of an old mine;

And to finish, to use the mine as an element that serves to recover the economic activity of the zone, in this case taking advantage of its tourist attraction.

The Matildes Mine was opened to the public in 2005 and has since passed around 30,000 visitors.
