The rehabilitation works of the Monastery of San Gines de la Jara continue as stipulated The tasks that are being carried out are progressing at a good pace and are based scrupulously on the previous historical studies carried out by the experts (06/06/2017)

The rehabilitation and restoration works of the Monastery of San Ginés de la Jara are progressing according to the schedule elaborated by the concessionaire of the works and based on previous studies carried out on the building to return it to its original state.

The Councilor for Archaeological Heritage, Ricardo Segado, and the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez, visited the site Tuesday, where they have checked first hand the progress of the tasks together with the municipal coordinator of Archaeological Heritage, María del Carmen Berrocal .

During their stay in the building the councilors and the coordinator have been able to observe that the project is fully in line with the one approved by the Directorate General of Cultural Assets in 2006 and approved by the Regional Administration at the time.

For this, studies are being carried out by the architect and specialist in Franciscan convents Francisco José Sánchez Medrano who clearly state how the cloister and the elements of the building were, as well as written information of authors of the XVI and XVII centuries who speak of what the monastery was like .

"That is the monastery that is going to recover," said María del Carmen Berrocal.

The municipal coordinator of Archaeological Heritage has referred to the alarm caused recently by the physical changes that have occurred in the exterior part of the works on the occasion of these rehabilitation works and explained that "at all" these actions can not be questioned since What is being done in reality "is to recover the traditional aspect," despite what it may seem.

This is understood if one takes into account the multiple transformations that the monastery has undergone throughout its history and the state of ruin in which it was in the last decades.

The primitive aspect in its outer part, according to Berrocal, had in medieval and modern times a defensive character.

Thus it was until the S. XIX, when it happened to private hands by virtue of the confiscation of Mendizábal and it acquires the family Starico to transform it into a villa of rest.

Its original function was not only sacramental, since it was destined to the passive defense to lodge the people that sheltered there in situations of danger, considering that there were moments in which the incursions of the Barbary pirates were frequent, from there Its fortified traces.

"The fact that modern materials are used does not contradict at all the fact that a restoration is being done with respect and dignity towards the remains that are found", has settled the municipal coordinator of Archaeological Heritage.

Ricardo Segado, for his part, indicated that they have found "important changes" regarding the visit they made a few months ago.

"We have been pleasantly surprised," he said, claiming to have found "a building already consolidated at 70%."

For this reason he has been satisfied with the results that are being obtained and he has commented that "little by little progressing in being able to conclude the building".
