[The UPCT budget is reduced by 1.7%, the first decrease since 2015 (22/12/2020)

| The lack of definition of the budget puts at risk the participation of the UPCT in the group of European Universities promoted by the European Commission | The Cartagena Policy is forced to cut its investment and research plans. The lack of a long-term financial framework, together with the tacit extension of the 2020 budget, have an impact on the waterline of the young Polytechnic The Social Council of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena approved this Tuesday the budget of the educational institution for 2021, which for the first time since 2015 is reduced compared to the previous year.

The UPCT will have a total budget of 62.8 million euros in the next fiscal year, 1.7% less than in 2020. The Polytechnic has approved its accounts assuming an extension of the nominative subsidy of the Autonomous Community, since the regional budgets have not been approved and the Pluriannual Financing Plan of the universities has expired.

that was in force between 2016 and 2020. The main item of expenditure for the University is personnel, which accounts for 73% of the total and which will increase 0.9%.

Current expenses, on the other hand, were reduced by 6% and amounted to just over 10 million euros.

Investments are also contracting, up to 8.6% and just over 6 million euros. The two main investment projects of the UPCT in 2021 will be those that correspond to the aid of the COVID-19 fund (1.2 million) and the one destined to the facilities of the School of Architecture and Building (0.8 million, financed with FEDER Funds from the European Union).

The remaining investments contract or disappear. Despite the efforts of the regional Administration with the extraordinary contributions derived from the pandemic, the reduction in the budget and the meager coverage margin of the nominative subsidy have motivated a critical position of the Council of Government of the UPCT, which yesterday met in an extraordinary way to approve a communiqué in which it asks the regional government to provide certainty about the budget scenario in order to give a letter of nature to “the bet for knowledge , the research and the technology that UPCT represents ”.

The Polytechnic of Cartagena states that it is in a “position of fragility never before experienced, just at the moment when it faces an ambitious project to establish its position in the European context through the University project European Technology ”. The entirety of the members of the Plenary of the Social Council held this morning has shown their full support for the demands of the teaching institution and urged "the autonomous authorities to defend the future of an institution that is fundamental for the economic and social progress of the Region of Murcia ”.
