Cartagena asks to accelerate the drainage of the aquifer to prevent flooding (18/09/2020)

| The Autonomous Community undertakes to incorporate these measures in the action proposals against large avenues | The Cartagena City Council considers that reducing the aquifer should be a priority objective both to combat floods and to reduce the entry of fresh water with nitrates into the Mar Menor.

This was stated this morning by the vice mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, at the inter-administrative coordination meeting called by the president of the regional government, Fernando López Miras, to analyze the proposals of the panel of experts against floods.Arroyo has had an impact “on the need to accelerate plans to increase the drainage of the aquifer, which continues with a very high water level, as evidenced by the outflow of water into the Mar Menor in the riverbed of the Rambla de El Albujón or on the access road to Los Nietos ”.The Regional Government, represented at the meeting by the councilors of Development and Environment, has accepted the proposal of the Cartagena City Council and will include in its program of measures those that must be activated to reduce the level of the aquifer.According to experts, "an overflowing aquifer dumps fresh water with nitrates into the Mar Menor, but also aggravates the damage in the event of rain," said the deputy mayor, who has insisted that "start the pumping of the Rambla de El Albujón was a good measure but it is not enough, there are already projects to reduce the aquifer but what we want is for these projects to accelerate as soon as possible ”.Arroyo recalled the municipal collaboration in projects to reduce the impact of rains on the environment, especially on the Mar Menor.

In this sense, he highlighted "the construction by the Autonomous Community of storm tanks, such as the one projected in Playa Honda, and in the programs for the improvement of the sewage and rainwater networks, which will involve the renovation or waterproofing of 5 kilometers of pipes on the Cartagena coast of the Mar Menor ".
