The City Council urgently hires the footbridges of the Mar Menor after receiving authorization from Costas (26/06/2020)

| These structures will be installed in Los Urrutias, Estrella de Mar and Punta Brava | The Cartagena City Council has begun the process of contracting the walkways that will facilitate bathing in five points of the southern Mar Menor, once the required authorization has been received from the State Coastal Demarcation.

These floating structures will be installed in Los Urrutias, Estrella de Mar and Punta Brava, the beaches with the greatest water access problems, according to the Vicalcaldesa, Noelia Arroyo. These are light structures with floating pontoons that have already been successfully experimented in the Mar Menor and that will be installed in Punta Brava, in Estrella de Mar, and in three points in Los Urrutias, which are the areas that have the greatest problems due to the presence of dried and not removed sludge. Its construction and installation contracts by emergency procedure to shorten terms and to improve the conditions of the bathroom this summer.

Arroyo has said that the government knows well that “the delays imposed by the state of alarm and the authorization of Costas are going to force us to carry out these installations with the advanced summer, but what we are not going to do is sit back.

Every day that these footbridges are installed will be a day in which the bathers of those beaches can have more quality of bath ”.The deputy mayor and head of the Mar Menor municipal commission recalled the recent emergency hiring of a brigade of 16 operators who will continue with the removal of algae undertaken by the Autonomous Community and which will bring up to 130 people destined for cleaning work.

and maintenance on the beach this summer. The pontoons, which are hired for 673,000 euros, will be between 62 and 110 m long, and always 2 m wide, in addition to a swimming platform perpendicular to the axis of the dock that will be 4 × 10 m with a lateral ramp for the access to people with reduced mobility, to comply with the accessibility requirements demanded by the vice mayor. These medium-length 80m platforms have been designed to achieve the functional draft that protects the marine flora that lie miles from the coast and prevents swimmers from contacting muddy areas. The structures must be made of wood with aluminum reinforcements to avoid corrosion and their surface must be non-slip based on high-density tropical wood planks, as established in the specifications. The entire structure will be maintained on the water by a flotation system using polyethylene structures.

The flotation system has been oversized to prevent the weight caused by the people who use it from causing any type of affection on the seabed.
