UPCT volunteers make single-use gowns for the staff of the Hospital Santa Lucía with plastic bags and adhesive tape (27/03/2020)

New solidarity initiative to prevent the spread of frontline health professionals against the coronavirus.

With just two 100-liter plastic bags, used for waste, and adhesive tape, you can make a gown for one of the doctors, nurses and other health workers at the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena.

The request arises from one of the many professionals who these days are asking for public help to make protective material with homemade products.

Each of these disposable gowns has great value because it is among the medical equipment that is scarce these days in many Spanish hospitals as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Professors and PAS of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) joined this citizen initiative yesterday and have already made more than fifty gowns.

Each person can 'make' up to ten gowns per day with plastic bags that can be bought in any supermarket, say Juana Mari Belchí, professor of the UPCT Language Service and Manoli Blanes, from the Physics department.

Material delivery.

The gowns will be delivered personally, in a few days, to one of the Heads of Service of the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena.

The request has come from this doctor, who prefers to remain anonymous.

To join this citizen initiative, you can contact WhatsApp at 651886551 or 609666230.

Citizens who want to make gowns can follow a tutorial that the health personnel have recorded for those who want to join the initiative.

UPCT Solidarity

The university community, which includes Teaching and Research Staff, Administration and Services Staff and students, has turned to selflessly helping health workers and people in need while the coronavirus crisis lasts.

In this sense, volunteers print sanitary material in 3D to stop contagion;

others participate through the #FrenaLaCurva movement helping neighbors who need it;

The University has also donated medical supplies to hospitals and health centers and has made its facilities available to the SMS if necessary.
