Equality seeks to raise awareness about violence against women with workshops, talks and a demonstration on 25N (18/11/2019)

The Department of Equality of the City of Cartagena has scheduled talks, workshops and a demonstration to commemorate November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In addition, there will be posters distributed throughout the city and on the urban buses of Cartagena.

The Department of Sports will also collaborate in this campaign with the creation of a ceramic mural on the Municipal Athletics Track in tribute to victims of gender violence.

The Councilor for Equality, David Martínez, and the coordinator of the Department, María José Mercader, presented this Monday, November 18, the activities of the 25N campaign, noting the mayor who with this campaign aims to "create social awareness that influences and get us to reflect and promote a paradigm shift, which makes us reflect on the importance of equality also in the use of language as a first step to prevent sexist violence. â€

In this regard, the councilman said there are more than 50 words to call a woman prostitute, while their male homonyms have positive meanings.

“Being a fox a cunning man, a fox is a prostitute.

A respectable public man has nothing to do with a public woman, a prostitute.

A guy is someone unidentified, while a girl is a prostitute;

a gulf is a pillo, a party animal, while a gulf is a prostitute;

any one is a poor nobody and one anyone, a prostitute;

He who does not have a certain destiny is lost, it causes us some affliction, while a loss is a prostitute… â€

For its part, the coordinator of the Department of Equality, María José Mercader, has detailed the activities that are being carried out to commemorate the day for the elimination of violence against women.

The program began on Friday, November 15, with a self-defense workshop against possible sexual assault.

On November 22 and 29 there will be new sessions of this workshop.

You have to register previously at the headquarters of the Department of Equality, in the La Milagrosa Building on Sister Francisca Armendáriz Street.

The Cartagena Fitness Gym, on Soldado Rosique Street, 6 under will teach this workshop.

On Wednesday, November 20, activities continue with a workshop on sexist violence against girls and women.

The person in charge of teaching it will be the psychologist Encarna Forca, from the Center for Specialized Care for Women Victims of Gender Violence (CAVI).

It will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the headquarters of the Department of Equality of Cartagena.

On Friday, November 22, there will be a talk-colloquium on the role of man in the fight against gender violence.

The specialist in new masculinities of the Association of Men for Gender Equality (AHIGE), Santiago Fernández Guillermón, will give this workshop at 19 hours in the cafeteria El Soldadito de Plomo, in the street Prince of Vergara, 1.

Monday, November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

To commemorate this date, the feminist associations and entities of Cartagena have organized a demonstration starting at 7 pm from the Plaza de España.

On Thursday, November 28 at 11 am, a ceramic mural will be inaugurated in the Municipal Athletics Track in tribute to all victims of gender violence under the name 'Women who speak with flowers'.

It will be accompanied by some words from Pablo Neruda, "they can count all the flowers, but they cannot stop the spring."

This initiative has the collaboration of the Department of Sports.

The flowers on the mural represent identity, growth, freedom, beauty and unity.

That same day there will be a workshop on sexist violence towards girls and women.

This is a concerted course with students of the IES Mediterráneo.

It will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the headquarters of the Department of Equality, in the La Milagrosa Building on Sor Francisca Armendáriz Street.

On Friday, November 29 from 11 to 14 hours, the Business Nursery for Women of the Department of Equality, next to the Mandarache Commercial Park, hosts the conference 'Facing the macho violence: walking together makes us strong'.

In this activity, women of different ethnicities and races will talk about their perception of sexist violence.

They will also propose new lines of action to generate new socio-political spaces that include intersectional and diverse axes that raise awareness about sexist violence.

This activity has limited capacity.

Interested persons must register previously at the headquarters of the Department of Equality, in the La Milagrosa Building.

That day there will also be a performance by the feminist gypsies of Cartagena and 'La Prima y San' in Valencia.

51 women killed so far this year

According to the Department of Equality of Cartagena, 51 women have been killed by their partners or ex-partners so far in 2019. Since data exist in 2003, 1,027 women have lost their lives in cases of gender-based violence.

So far this year, 43 children have been orphaned.

In addition, 3 minors have been killed by their parents.

Since January 1, 2013, the number of orphaned children for cases of sexist violence has risen to 275. As for minors killed since 2013, the figure is 34.

CAVI has carried out 1383 actions so far in 2019

The Councilor for Equality of Cartagena, David Martínez, and the coordinator of the Department of Equality, María José Mercader, have reported that the Center for Specialized Care for Victims of Gender Violence has carried out 1,383 actions so far this year.

They recalled that CAVI has 2 social workers, 2 psychologists, 3 social educators and 1 legal advisor.

In addition, the mayor and the Equality coordinator have recalled that there is a shelter in Cartagena for women with children.
