The Food Bank of Cartagena already has a new headquarters, whose rent will be assumed by the City Council (23/08/2019)

After the meeting last July in which the municipal government pledged to collaborate in the reopening of the Food Bank in Cartagena, the new board of directors, by the hand of its president, Juan Gómez, together with the vice mayor and head of the Area of Social Welfare and Sports, Noelia Arroyo, and the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García.

They have visited this morning what will be the new headquarters, located in the Industrial Estate of La Palma and expected to be operational in January 2020, on the occasion of the next distribution of food from the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF) .

More than 12,500 families are beneficiaries of these foods distributed by NGOs that, since the order of the closure of the headquarters of Cartagena from the Federation of Food Banks of Spain (FESBAL), has been the Food Bank of Segura who has supplied throughout the Region, so the NGOs of Cartagena had to travel there for the distribution in the region.

The next step is the presentation of the project to the FESBAL, whose draft has been delivered on this visit by the board of directors to the vice mayor, with the aim of having Cartagena in the first distribution in January next year.

According to Noelia Arroyo, the municipal government has provided the necessary institutional support and has fulfilled its commitment to promote the reopening of the Food Bank in Cartagena.

Thus, the Cartagena City Council will be responsible for the expenses of the new premises and their rent.

The ship has been chosen by the board of directors together with infrastructure technicians because it is the most suitable and does not need to be practically conditioned, since it has only required cleaning.

It has a large space, divided for classified food and has a cold room.

The objective of food banks is the recovery of food surpluses before they break down, managing them properly and bringing them to people in need.
