The PCAN proposes the rehabilitation of the Central Cinema as a municipal theater (24/05/2019)

An infrastructure as necessary as nonexistent.

The Cantonal Party includes in its electoral program the rehabilitation of the Central Cinema as a municipal theater.

For this initiative to reach a successful conclusion, the Autonomous Community would sign an agreement for the transfer of the emblematic building to the City Council once the rehabilitation works of the same have been completed.

All the important cities of Murcia, Alicante, Elche, Almeria or Lorca- have a building for representations of public ownership without the need of leasing to private property as it happens now in Cartagena with the New Theater Circus.

The Autonomous Community acquired the Central Cinema from the Banco de Santander at the end of 2016. Since then, the regional budgets collected games every year for the start of the restoration works that in the end always remained in nothing.

A balance of almost three years lost in the recovery of the property of the Plaza de la Merced presents the regional government to the citizenship when its term ends.

Three long years in which the Ministry of Culture, which headed the current head of municipal list of the Popular Party, Noelia Arroyo, stumbled with the commission of a rehabilitation study at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena that ultimately served little longer that the same autonomous department has recently opted for the call for a public contest of ideas that, more than likely, reaches conclusions different from the UPCT report.

The candidate for mayor and general secretary of the PCAN, Celestino García Alfaro, considers that the regional administration has done nothing more than "commissioning studies with the sole intention of making the process longer and delaying as much as possible fundamental works for the regeneration of the environment from the lake".

"If there was true political will, the rehabilitation would be almost finished instead of not starting, there has been plenty of time," he adds.

The cantonal corporation, during the four years of its mandate between 1987 and 1991, already acquired the Main Theater with the purpose that Cartagena would once again have a municipal representation hall.

However, the local government of Pilar Barreiro (PP) revoked this decision and sold the old property of the Plaza del Rey to private property.

Shortly after, the new owners demolished the building for the construction of houses on its lot in an attempt against the cultural patrimony of the city.
