CTSSP asks that the city council join the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the periodic table (20/03/2019)

For Francisco Martínez, councilor of Cartagena Sí Se Puede, the periodic table of chemical elements is one of the most representative milestones in the history of science.

The mayor recalls that on December 20, 2017, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements recognizing the need to develop a growing global awareness of the key role that chemistry plays in the Sustainable Development providing important solutions to global challenges such as energy, food, health or education, among others.

In addition, he adds that 2019 marks the centenary of the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry).

For the Councilman of We can the events of IUPAC100 and IYPT will contribute to improve the understanding and evaluation of the Periodic Table and the chemistry as a whole.

The councilor of the purple formation comments that with the planned activities at world-wide level pretends:

a) Recognize the importance of chemistry and advances in research and discoveries related to the periodic table of chemical elements for the sustainable development and well-being of humanity,

b) Underline that the periodic table is widely used in vital spheres of scientific knowledge such as chemistry, physics and biology,

c) To consider that the celebration of the 150th anniversary offers an opportunity to highlight the continuous nature of scientific discoveries in different contexts, to promote scientific education incorporating measures that end inequality of access and promotion based on sex, and discrimination suffered by underdeveloped and developing countries.

For all these reasons, Cartagena Sí Se Puede can ask the rest of the groups to support their support so that the City Council is addressed to the scientific communities of the Universities of the Region of Murcia, through the rectorships, as a sign of their recognition, admiration and respect.
